Okay OD experts. I'm gonna get a used truck. Has to be 4WD. gonna be using it to haul shit for the house whether it be wood. I jist chopped, Gravel, rock, or a deer if I get on this year. I want it to be a beater so I don't feel bad if I ding it up. Im talking early 90s or late 80s, 3 grand type of deal. I've been hearing Tacomas give you a lot of bang for your buck and last forever. Discuss....

Does it have to be full sized? Would a Dodge Dakota work? For some reason I've know that have had some Dodge Dakota's not driven a lot of miles in the later years, that have seemed to last forever.

New or used?
I'm partial to the Ford Fx4. It's anoit as badass of a built regular full size frame/suspension as you're going to get.
I'm a hippie so I got the 2.7 v6 twin turbo, but I actually love the engine in my truck and I use it for hauling, pulling a boat occasionally, work type stuff all the time. The good ol 5.0 is a badass though if you need it.

Yota would work if you don’t need a full size bed.

1985/6 chevy shortbed 4x4. Boom, all you need. Easy to work on, parts are cheap. And it looks good. LOL

I had a 1990 Toyota sr5 (they are not called Tacomas until 94 I think) with the 4 banger 22re. It was slow as fuck but I never once got stuck and I lived in the mountains at the time and did a ton of slow trail driving in the spring when the snow was still around.

Toyota's are pretty light weight for any real work, but I don't think you can beat their longevity if you don't need anything too big. If you actually have to do some real hauling and payload stuff, if you can find a f250 with the 7.3 liter diesel, buy it.

Floyd, when you say hauling...
Do you mean just toss a bunch of stuff in the bed? Or do you mean actually hitching up a trailer or putting literally a ton of soil in the back?
There is a slight difference.

Sorry. Old ass truck. It isn't going to be hauling much except maybe Gravel and fell trees once a cut them up for firewood. Maybe a canoe or kayak. Want something that will be able to get me out of the house when it snows as well. I like Dayworks idea. Old, cheap cheap to fix.

I want a new truck but it's more for the heated seats and upgraded crap then anything else. Even when I do finally pull the trigger on a new one...I'm not going to get rid of the one I have now. The one I have now will just be turned into 100% work truck Especially since I checked and its literally 7 bucks more a month if I insure both.

General car buying advice:
Lease returns are always a great choice to look into. Right now car dealers are having a surplus of 2015 lease returns.
Leased vehicle are well maintained. Part of the lease package is usually free maintenance at the dealer. Plus all repairs done well at the dealer shop under warranty. . And don't forget that people take extra care of leased vehicles, avoiding any excessive wear surcharges. Always low mileage too with most leased vehicles averaging 12 to 15k miles a year.

I've had a 1995 ford f-350 4x4 dually for 8 years. Have never engaged 4WD, probably doesnt work, but the truck has been nothing but wonderful in spite of extensive use and horrid abuse, the most egregious example being [story, probably boring, follows]
my guy is telling me "Derrf, boss, duh truck is making noise; my mechanic buddy** says it's either the timing chain or lifters." Over the next couple weeks, he mentions it a few times, then starts saying he's scared to drive it it's ticking so bad like it's going to blow. So I see it's parked on level ground and I pop the hood. I almost felt like I was insulting him for checking the oil, but lo and behold, it was 5 fucking quarts low. Changed the oil right there, the noise was instantly gone and it has run 500 miles a week for about 6 months since. My mechanic buddy*** says it probably did no damage, but if it blows up in 2, or 10, years, I'll attribute it to this blunder.
**Mechanic buddy= guy in the trailer park works as a day laborer spreading mulch and running an edger but professes to be a master mechanic ***My mechanic buddy= guy who owns and runs a shop with 4 bays and lifts

So I'm checking out a 2000 Dodge 1500 4x4. Guy is asking 3 grand. Needs new front brakes and an exhaust manifold gasket. Checked online and it isn't terribly expensive but I may see if he will split the difference in his asking price. I don't know dick about trucks so I'm gonna take a bunch of pictures and ask a bunch of questions before making an offer.

Dude likely realized the resale value on a dodge is garbage and kept it because who the fuck wants to drop 40k+ on a new one?

Didn't Jackel imported European vehicles and classic cars last year?
Maybe Jackel can hook you up with some of his car sale connections. Even you are not looking for a classic, he knows people.

If he wants a custom truck, I can hook him up with a crew from NY that rebuilds old trucks, maybe get a discount but probably not within the budget he wants. You could go the top gear route. Get a cheap ass ford transit, and throw a jag engine in there.
