Serious question. I know nothing of the man. What did he do that was significant?

This could have been handled via Google. One of the things that put him on the map in science communities is the idea of Hawking radiation. That was in 1974. He is also a prolific writer, authoring over 15 books and hundreds of articles (as a conservative estimate.) He brought an understanding of science to lay people, similar but not quite as impactful (IMO) as someone like Carl Sagan.
Also, he was supposed to die like several decades ago but lasted a long ass time for someone with ALS, he lived for 50 years with the condition. He was featured on TV shows such as The Big Bang Theory and The Simpsons. He also had a movie made about him.
That is probably why it was such a big deal when he passed. A dude that was supposed to die of ALS lived over 50 years while helping humans understand some of the universe's most perplexing phenomenon, black holes. Dude wrote books with cheek twitches, averaging like a couple of words a minute.

But what did he actually contribute to society that either helps us or was a provable groundbreaking theory?

I like the fact that he was a stout atheist and didn't shy away from stating that. Knew our society is still plaqued and held back by religion and the nut jobs that bow down to that bullshit.
"We are each free to believe what we want and it is my view that the simplest explanation is there is no God. No one created the universe and no one directs our fate. This leads me to a profound realisation. There is probably no heaven, and no afterlife either. We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe, and for that, I am extremely grateful"
R.I.P
You were a man that was way ahead of your time era. And walked amongst us in a time of us being so oblivious, most couldn't fully appreciate you.

Something happened during his later years that made him show his bottom teeth. Not sure why they didn't get that fixed for him.

But what did he actually contribute to society that either helps us or was a provable groundbreaking theory? While nothing he did contributed "directly" (yet), the way he came to his theories have caused scientists across a wide variety of fields to consider thinking in another way that allowed them to come up with theories that many of which probably have contributed in a way and never would have come about without him. He was more a catalyst for contribution rather than a contributor himself.

But what did he actually contribute to society that either helps us or was a provable groundbreaking theory? He contributed to our understanding of the universe. You can't "prove" a scientific theory anyway. Why do people care about Richard Dawkins or Neil DeGrasse Tyson? They've made science accessible to many people. They have inspired future generations of scientists that may one day come up with something that changes human history. Contributing to our understanding of the world around us is invaluable.

If you read the article, he definitely played a strong role in all we understand about black holes and their inverse relation to the big bang. The stuff he theorized with just math is pretty amazing because the ideas he explored are trippy as fuck.

You can’t prove a scientific theory? Nope. Not if you science, bro. So if you come up with a theory, it can't be proven correct or incorrect? What is the value in a theory until it is proven correct or incorrect? What is the value in just throwing shit against the wall with no ability to ever in the next 10 generations to even test it?

What is the value in just throwing shit against the wall with no ability to ever in the next 10 generations to even test it? Because it also lays a groundwork on how to work over time to test it, develop the technology to test it, and develop other theories/applications based on it. Look at evolution, Darwin couldn't prove it. Granted we have since proved evolution exists but not that Homo sapiens actually evolved from anything. However even before that, much of our physiological research and advances have relied on assuming that theory is correct, and we have benefited from that theory.

You have evidence enough to accept the theory but you can't prove it. Evolution has an insurmountable amount of evidence so we accept it but it has never been "proven" because science must admit that we don't "know" anything. The laws of physics could change tomorrow so we don't say we've proved gravity.

I just don’t understand putting him on a hero type pedestal when all his work is on stuff that will likely never impact the human race. Do something that makes this world a better place and that’s worth celebrating... theorize for 60 years about something that can’t be validated and will never be a part of our existence...meh.

I just read an article that said Hawking published an article 10 days prior to dying that might lay the groundwork to creating a method to actually test if we live in a multiverse by measuring CMB. Probably will not amount to anything but still cool to think about. I don't personally put him on a pedestal, he isn't pussy. He was just a really smart guy that should have died in his 30s but beat the odds while becoming a brilliant cosmologist. We shouldn't name a city after him but I just respect what he has done. I was also really into cosmology about 5 or 6 years ago. Couldn't get enough of it so I'm biased.
