I hunt probably too much. I live in an area where you can hunt something all year. Deer season just ended in the zone closest to my house (killed a 21" 4x4), and is open for another 4 weeks in a zone 2 hours north where I will hunt... that makes 12 straight weeks of rifle deer season open. We will start hunting hogs in about a month, just need a rain to knock all of the foxtails down so the dogs don't end up in the vet. We will hunt hogs until April/May dependent on weather. There is no limit to how many you can kill and a lot of the reason to hunt them is to keep them from taking over and ruining the hills... so we (8 - 10) friends kill 100+ a year. November 14th we leave for SW Colorado for Bull/Cow Elk. We have been fortunate to each kill 2 elk the last few years. There is year round Coyote/Bobcat calling as you can never kill enough of those bastards. Duck season starts in early November, which I only do about 10 days of. This doesn't even count Salmon fishing, Dungeness Crab, Abalone Diving, Spear Fishing, River Steelhead, Turkey, and the annual Dove shoot. My wife is amazing for putting up with me. The nice thing is unless we want to just taste beef or chicken, we don't buy any meat from the store. It is definitely not cheaper but the pure organic value is worth it. Where in cali do you live again? That all sounds amazing.

Ok I'll go ahead and say it. You don't work, so what's stopping you? Geez you seem to live this life where you just sit in your apartment daydreaming. Only you can make shit happen. If you go to a hunt camp and tell some hunters you've never hunted before...they'll be stoked to help you (at least in my experience.) Open your front door. I don't even know what a hunt camp is. I don't have the money to get equipment, I don't have a vehicle to get to anywhere to hunt, etc... I was going to learn with Jess's sisters in-laws but since they are now divorced that is out of the question. Only hunters I do know in IL/MO are not the kind of hunters I want to be with anyways. They out there to kill the animals for the sake of killing them. I'd do it for the food. But, what is a hunt camp? How do I find one? What is expected of me? Start small. Get a knife and hunt squirrels in the parks.

No dogs! But I'm ok with cats.
Hunting pigeons might be the shit. You gotta be quick to get them with a knife. Or just throw some food at them and they will come.
Jackel will probably make a great hunter. He can't hear, so he will be using his other heightened senses to stalk his prey.

Since Jackel has the time, he should get a set of throwing knives and start getting his aim down.

He has to heal from the broken toe, how do you expect him to have great balance while throwing?

Whats this broken toe story about? I broke my toe sliding into bottom of counter in the kitchen the other week. It's all good now. Doesn't bend right, but I walk fine with the foot now.

I got in to hunting last year and just got back from 10 days in the bush hunting moose and elk way the fuck up north. I used to bird hunt a little bit but this is only year 2 on big game.
I didn't get anything this time but my buddy shot the biggest cow elk i've ever seen, should be a ton of meat. We process our animals ourselves with the exception of some trim which we take to a butcher to be turned in to sausage. I'd prefer to keep it all as raw product myself but my buddies love smokies and pepperoni, it's a group decision. The only chance I had to legally shoot anything was a couple of wolves but I passed on them, fur tastes like shit, I was there for meat. I actually saw them chasing 3 moose and then they came right back to the clearing and were sniffing around a bit, they were about 60 yards away and had no idea I was there, one of the coolest experiences of my life.
It is my new obsession, I absolutely love it and wish I got started years ago. Deer season opens up here later this month but the areas I hunt are open in November (rifle season, archery has been open for a while) so I have a little break in between. Can't wait...

Went for a couple hours yesterday and today. Passed on a doe. I won't do that again but I won't get another chance for a week or so.

Should have blasted those Wolves.... those cocksuckers are ruining the deer/elk herds all over the northern U.S. Elk meat is so good. I love shooting cow elk knowing that 200 pounds of meat is coming my way. My wife would rather eat Elk than anything else, and that is saying a lot since she hates anything gamey. Good luck with deer season... I wish ours didn't end so early in the year.

I have never seen one in the wild, but did a project for a big pot grower up in a town called Legget and he had 2 wolves chained to either end of his massive greenhouse. I don't know how to compare them to what you saw, but I was completely blown away at the size of these animals. He claimed they were pure Grey Wolves that were found as pups, but I don't know if I am willing to believe him or not. Regardless, the size of their frames and heads were insane.

Kyle, that's amazing that you can do that where you live. I'm jealous, in a very inspirational type of way. I would love to have a freezer full of meat I've hunted. And Elk is delicious.

Jackel - if you really want to hunt, join a hunting forum for your state. Meet some people, look for some used gear and get out there. Stop limiting yourself. You make simple tasks seem so complicated.
I got a quality Bear recurve used and 4 arrows from Walmart and that's enough to get you into the field.
Oh and you can't sell the meat. That's a good way to get some real jail time and a huge fine.

However, I can walk into the local bar, ask who wants to buy fresh boar, and could sell the thing right there and nobody gonna say a damned thing. Anyways I have 14$ to my name, actually I think it 13.75. I doubt I can buy what I need to get into the field with that, I'm gonna stay focused on finding work before I worry about learning to hunt.

Elk is so good apparently even wolves like it! Those bastards! Let them eat vegetables!
Antelope was pretty good the one time I tried it... Had to fight a pack of coyotes over it though.

This desire to kill myself because I have nothing to do each day but look for jobs is enough motivation.

Have you tried panhandling? I hear it's quite profitable... We, the OD can help you create a very creative sign...

Kyle, that's amazing that you can do that where you live. I'm jealous, in a very inspirational type of way. I would love to have a freezer full of meat I've hunted. And Elk is delicious. You should start putting in for preference points for Deer, Elk, Antelope and Sheep. It is very inexpensive to put in for points, and as you start accumulating you will set yourself up for hunts later. I have 12 points for Deer, Elk and Antelope and I am going to continue gaining points until my son is 12 - 14, at which point I will have about 20 points and can draw some great hunts that he can go on me with.
