Starting to level out a little before a 10K on the 10th. 3.65 miles this morning at a good pace for me. The only notable thing is that I got up at 5am to fit it in. I'd love to transition to all 5am jogs. Gets the blood flowing early and feels great. Its also pretty hard to find timing conflicts, other than sleep, at 5am.
Little bit of a long trot on Saturday then I'm looking forward to 3-4 mile jog in our nations capitol next week while on a work trip.
Pump it up

For the past few weeks, I've been making a concerted effort to go to the gym every day and get a few miles in on the treadmill. At first, getting back into running was absolute torture. It's getting better, though, and I'm feeling better for doing it. I'm never going to be a super great marathon runner, but I'm actually enjoying running for the first time in my life.

10K completed. Predicted 56:30 and crushed it with a 56;28.
Thats great Jsporty. Treadmill only? I don't do treadmill much, I'd rather battle the elements most of the time.

Sometimes, I'll take one of the dogs for a run, but it's been mostly treadmill. I may start doing more outdoor running, but just to get my stamina up and get some mileage under my belt, I'm starting with the treadmill first. I'm still really in the early stages, so I'm open to branching out.

If you build up to it, I do recommend doing an event. 5K's generally stay in the fun category and its long enough to build up to if you're just starting off. SOmetimes its nice just to set a date and a distance and work towards it.

I like the idea of working towards something like that.

These are the people who signed up to a gym & quit after a couple of months. Pudgies, the lot of them. One has been going to the gym for over a year & still rotund. Idk what their routines are but buying an expensive gi doesn't make you a blackbelt.

Agreed, bobo. It's been two weeks, and I'm already seeing and feeling results, so hopefully I don't fall in that category Right now we have exercise equipment at the clubhouse of our complex, so I'm not paying anything for a gym membership. I'm also kind of a pussy when it comes to the heat and humidity. I do a lot of walking outside as it is, but running in the ridiculous summer heat will probably never be my thing.

I will give you the heat and humidity. Over 80 degrees seems to affect me. Not a big deal, but you have to kind of plan out some hydration and everything and maybe slow it down. I'm most comfortable really between 30-60 F. Even a bit colder I know how to handle pretty well.

I can't imagine trying to run in that. I'm definitely building up endurance and strength on the treadmill, though. Maybe when fall comes, I'll make the transition to outdoor running. Fall is my favorite season, and I can see myself enjoying a nice jog when the weather's cool and the leaves are all colorful.

Spud Run 5K - 25:46, my phone said I actually went 3.2 so that was close to an 8:02/mile pace, course said I went 3.1 so a little slower than that. Felt great, had a little left in the tank but came up to a 10 year old girl who was struggling a little. Gave her a pump up and stayed with her down the stretch. She of course dusted me in the final 50 meters or so and won her age group. It was pretty funny, she immediately said "Thank You, I just need someone to talk to me." It kind of looked like her dad ran too and left her in the dust, had some older brothers there too that looked like they just played video games all day.

That's really cool of you. Also, kudos on the time. I tell the story as if I helped her, but really, she probably kept me going a little quicker down the stretch. I was losing steam a little bit.

It has been a little hit or miss on the jogging. Hot, slow run yesterday for about 4.2 miles. Getting back into the swing a little bit after the event pump ups. I need to lock in another 10K event for Aug/Sept to keep a little fear/excitement of an event going. I've probably said before, I'd like to try a 10K trail run, there are some around here through the woods etc, but I think I'd like to do one more roady first.
Keep pumping.

I was having some knee soreness, so I cut back the mileage a bit the past few days. Still getting in a daily run or jog, but I want to be careful not to get seriously injured.

Early on you have to listen to the body. Missing a day or a couple of days won't kill your running. If you want to stay in routine, try some other workouts. Running in the pool if you have access to it or just regular swimming, elliptical, light resistance/weight lifting, would all be good. I had a run-in with hip issues, it was hard mentally, but took about 7-8 days off and then started back slowly. The physical part came back pretty quickly.
Right now have run 3 days in a row, including one day in the woods on narrow trails (which was fun). 3.2, 3.8, 4.2 miles. I am thinking of doing a little less today, more like 3.00 range. Testing a streak here, I feel fine, I'm not pushing it extremely hard, but I've also never run 4 days in a row. We'll see.

My "streak" of 5K's or more ended yesterday. It lasted an entire 4 days. That being said I wasn't really intending to do a streak, but it was a nice little test on back-to-back-to-back running days. I was a little concerned about even running back-to-back.
Next on the hit list is a 10 Mile event that is part of the Twin Cities Marathon on October 1st. My daughter's skating coach actually text me with a guaranteed entry code which was nice. It's a popular event here alongside the marathon with limited spots available.

I've done a little over 4 miles a day for the past three days, and just over three miles for several days before that. I'm feeling good...varying the pace and making sure not to kill my knees. I can tell I'm getting stronger. Overall I've run every day since June 7th. I didn't go into this intending to lose weight, but I can definitely tell that's happened. My clothes are fitting differently.

Wow, that is a pretty long streak. I still take some days off. I huffed out 7 miles on Saturday morning. I thought I felt pretty good. My wife and daughter were just leaving the cul de sac to go to the zoo when I was returning. They said I didn't look that great, so maybe I had a little less in the tank than I thought.

4 mile slog last night. Not sure if it is weekends of poorer eating and sometimes drinking, or the long runs on the weekend that make the early week runs worse. Something tells me its a little of both.
In any case, I have a hill course mapped out for training. The 10 mile event in Oct has some pretty moderate but long duration climbs in tough spots (miles 4-7ish), that is my main concern on the course. Most of the running around my house is pretty flat.

Nice! I, too, slogged through 4 miles. I did it a few hours ago. I was planning on going directly after work, but I was completely exhausted after the overnight shift, so I took a nap first.

Interesting week last week. I was Jeb Bush-ish at a debate the middle of last week and did no runs T, W, Th. Then I did a pretty brisk 4 miles on Friday evening, 7.5 early Saturday morning. That didn't feel the best but I still think its good to practice some different types of adversity, this one being short recovery time. I better start activity-wise this week with a 2 mile slowski on Sunday, and run yesterday. Still feel dog-ish early in the week. Trying to start hitting at least 20 miles per week total before I build up a little more in August.

Last post was followed by 2.5 bum weeks. Starting to get back in the groove. I'm guessing a cool stretch in the mid 60's vs mid 90's helped me out a bit. Time to buckle down to build up towards a comfortable 10 mile trot.
I have a 1.5-2.0 stretch of modest incline in the last 3rd of the 10 mile course on 10/1. In lieu of hill training on some days. I'm actually thinking about stopping and doing burpees in miles 7 and 8 of long runs. Or I can just find some better hills.

7.2 today, felt pretty good. I could have tacked on a few miles. I still don't really get going on 15-20 mile jogs for marathon prep. I think I could do it, but I still think 13.1 will be all that could hold my intensity . I'd be more likely to add things like 10K to 1/2 marathon trail runs, hike runs, or other challenges other than adding distance. I guess I'll find out.

I am averaging somewhere between 3 and 4 miles a day now. I'm feeling healthier than ever, and the initial issues I had with my knee seem to have gotten better. I've been varying the pace. Most days I go for distance, but one day a week I go all out and see how far I can go at a much faster pace. One day a week I'll do the opposite and just go as far as I can. 7 miles is my top distance so far without stopping. I never in a million years would have thought that I'd be one of those people who likes to run. I've been using the Nike+ Run Club app to keep track of my runs. Very cool app if anyone else is into that kind of thing.

Not sure how but heal spurs and plantar fasciitis have died down a bit. I can only assume it was the increased beer drinking and decreased running. That spell should be over for the next few weeks. 7.2 miles, steady pace, quick and easy cool down this morning.
