Anyone else on here just like to zip out a jog? I've been building back up some jogging endurance without a set goal in mind. 15 years ago I'd jog enough to do a 10K with my dad once per spring. Not really a competitive thing and usually went about a 10 minute mile. I've mentioned in other threads that I've shed a lot of lbs, so I'm just about as light as I was in high school. In any case, I jogged out 9 miles yesterday. Everyone asks if I'm training for a 1/2 marathon or something else. In reality, I just like jogging, I say I might run 10 miles next weekend and just decide that is the farthest I ever need to run.
We're not talking Forrest Gump action here, I still can only get these old bones on about 3 jogs per week. I can't ever see taking the time and effort to do a full marathon event, but if I crank up another couple of miles I might do a half marathon event. Until then its just a see how far I can jog deal.
Do we have any runners (more like joggers) here? I'm enjoying it now without needed the push of being locked into a 10K or 10 mile or 15K or whatever running event.

Have done some running in the past when I was doing tris. Don't enjoy jogging for the sake of jogging though. I do run in the winters about every 10-14 days just to keep some shape in the running legs during the winter and so that if i have to be out of town for awhile... I can take up running for say three straight days and keep some shape... but not have it be such a new stress on the legs.
As you probably know... if u can jog 2 hours at a comfortable pace.... you can most definitely do a half marathon . The only things you would need to decide would be what kind of goals you want for times. If you are setting up for a half, and are running three days a week, I'd suggest doing one day at your all day slow jogging pace, spending another doing a moderate distance jog, and spending one doing mile repeats. After a 1.5 mile warm up as slowbslow slow almost too slow to call it jogging pace.... do one mile at your 10k pace. Then recover for half a mile again at that slow slow pace. Then repeat the mile effort. Recover. Soon you should be able to easily crank out three mile repeats. Then u can start cutting the time.
Such workouts don't necessarily turn you into the slave of the stop watch... and are still enjoyable and have low chances for injury and it would seem fit well with your tone of enjoyable jog training.
Just my 2 cents. (Or pence)

Jogging around update-
I actually developed a little hip pain, seems most likely to be some hip flexor straining/inflammation. There is 1-1.5 stretch where the running path has a pretty good slope to it. I'm doing one week of relative rest and then re-routing around that stretch of trail on long runs.
I'm not technically training for an event so some rest seems reasonable. If I'm not back up and running in 2 weeks, please blow up my PMs and or come to my house and drag me into the street. It's a good feeling to be antsy about taking a break, but it does tickle the edges of paranoia about losing a step.
Pump it up.

Reset the clock on dragging me out into the street and kicking the shit out of me. Hip flared up 2 steps into run, trotted out slow 1.5 miles, didn't go away. Talked to PT-guy (free phone call to my nephew) and he said it doesn't matter if its Bursitis, Tendonitis, or small hip flexor tear, the prescription is rest and the slow ramp up. So I'm off the street 1 week and then re-evaluate. Give me at least 10 days to report before dragging me out into the street and kicking the shit out of me.

I got an app called couch to 5k which trains you to run a 5k within like 6 or 8 weeks. I've never ran in my life outside of high school sprints and when I was required to for P.E.
Couldn't make it through the first run because my knee is fucked up. I feel old as shit. Bum neck, bum knee, and can't do shit.

I'll be hitting the pavement within 28 hours (tomorrow after work at the latest). No hip tenderness lately, will probably do a slow 3 miles but may crank it up if I'm feeling well (cranking it up the pace for me would be about 8:30 second miles).
HMF, you're not as old as me, so struggle on! Though a brisk walk or run/walk can be just as good to start. Just getting your body to do anything for longer periods of time is part of the process. I feel you though, there's days where people can't figure out which side I'm limping on because its both (or neck and back). Usually that comes from pushing it a little too far, or not doing a good job of resting/icing/elevating/hydrating and recovering.

I can still work out which I plan on starting tomorrow because I am done with my clinical. There are certain things I have to avoid because of my neck injuries (dead lift, any heavy pulls, and back squat). Plan on doing circuits for cardio because I have something wrong with my right knee. It gets to the point where it will give out on me due to pain.
I have a plan, I think to get back into it.

Back pounding the pavement. Nice and easy 2.5 miles, no injury flares, normal jogging around ills. Mini-build now through 4/23, with some 3-4 milers and a 6.2 mile test on 4/22 or 4/23 barring any setbacks. Then build back up from there. Looking forward to a nice easy 8.5 trot to Buffalo Wild Wings on a Saturday in May. Makes the beer and wings feel a little more warranted, need a ride home from the fam after that though.

Two runs in this week. 3.2 @ long distance pace on Tuesday and 2.2 @ quicker pace to work on pace (and to get home for the Bucks game). Barring physical issues hoping for an easy 5-6 mile trot tomorrow morning.

3.7 miles on Sunday, didn't get a longer run in due to time constraints, but kept a quicker pace. Felt good start to finish, felt I could have gone on longer. Doing a slower build up to longer distances for now.

I'm planning to do running again. I was a cardio machine until I stopped training last year. I still do some exercises regularly, mostly burpees & bas rutten with exercises in-between the minute breaks. When I tried running uphill because it was raining while I was going home, I've never gassed hard or felt that my legs are made of lead. Fuck. Getting old sucks.

Bobo, I can't claim I made this up, but Just Do It. Also, talked to I guy I know tonight. I didn't know he just jogged around much. Turns out he has a 1700+ day streak of running at least 4 miles. I've heard of people joining stupid things like internet communities.. get it ..and doing challenges or streaks like this (usually for a year or something, 1700 definitely in the extreme end). I told him I had read about this and asked if he was participating with a forum or group or something. He does not, he just jogs along with his streak and now basically can't imagine breaking it. I would categorize this as taking it just a touch too far no? update: used the googles.. people are nuts www.runeveryday.com/lists/USRSA-Active-List.html

4.0 mile trot last night. Need to get back into 2-3 weekday jogs, and 1 long boy on the weekend. Doing a 10K June 10th and would like to feel good enough to push the whole way through. For me that would be averaging under 8:30 min/mile.

That or genetic miracles. Never getting sick over a 40 year period or just running through it for several miles? If true, I admire these people and wonder if they are even human. If fluffed up a bit, still bad ass.

I'm running a half marathon on Sunday. My first in going in three years--7th overall. I typically run about 5 miles a day. I have a sit and rot desk job so I enjoy it.
Had someone I work with ask me to give them a few tips as far for training. Sorta got me pumped to run another. Realistically if you can 5-6 miles--you can run a half.
I did my last hard until Sunday today--7 Miles at 6:38 pace so I feel good. Ideally I'd like to run 7:30 miles and finish around the 1:40 mark but the course is surprisiningly tough for a half. If I had an extra two weeks--I'd have zero concerns. That said, I should be fine.
I typically run 5-6 miles Monday-Friday. Saturday run around 8-10.
In the beginning it's all about listening to yr body.

Nice, where are you running this Sunday? Good luck, that's a blazing pace in my book. It is weird, some people hate running, I think its great. Zero percent chance I risk injury to play softball or many other activities, but I'll deal with the aches and pains of jogging as long as I can.

Nice run, even better it had some extra cause to it.
Nice little 5 mile trot today at 9:07 pace. Feeling like I'm on pace to run hard for a 10K in a couple weeks. Anything under 9:00 pace would feel good, under 8:30 would be a surprise.

So I'll ask--cause I can give ya some guidance. Do we have some goals or just running to get into some good shape?
Either way--power to ya.

Primarily running for fitness but also because I enjoy playing it. At this point for the 10K in June (Bellin Run in Green Bay, WI) I am getting back to recreational running at an event I used to do. Since I decided I would do this I guess my goal has been to be in good enough shape to run at the faster end of my workout pace and then still feel goos enough to push it in the second 5K of the event and see where I end up. After this event I'd like to be more active and participate in either a 10K or 1/2 every other month or so. Again this would be mainly to keep the fitness going. I'll call that phase I, where I think consistency is the goal really. After that I may be interested in more actual time/pace goals or distance event goals. Of course, feedback or recommendations are great.
If I had to state goals it'd be something like - Goal 1 = 10K feel good enough to push a little rather than 'just get through it. Goal 2 would probably be 1/2 in a similar feel good about fitness and run it with a little bit more vigor than just grinding through it.

Good quick 2.0 in the foothills of Pennsylvania on Ties and a 4 mile trot last night. Had my first technical malfunction when at some point I accidentally paused Map My Run and didn't notice until the one mile mark. Not a big deal but it was a little distracting not getting the pace and distance info. I actually ran a little faster than normal.

Mediocre 3.5 miles today. Bit of a time constraint, case of the mehs, kind of ate crappy lately too. Insert fart noise.

Mediocre 4.1 miles last night. Today I'd like to say that heat and humidity bogged me down a little. It wasn't too bad though.

3.3 mile trot, 8:51 pace. That is pretty brisk for me, felt fine, not sure if I had another 3 miles at that pace in me but that would be a feel good pace for a 10K.

I'm hoping I jinx myself with this story and my gear shows up when I go for a walk again.
Rain gear taken. I did a 6.5 miler in the rain Saturday morning. Around 3 miles my rain jacket was bugging the shit out of me and I was too hot. I took off jacket and gloves, rolled tight and tucked under a spruce tree by the sidewalk.
It was gone when I came back for it later in the morning. I know I'm taking a risk, but its not like it was a nice day and tons of people were strolling by (it was obscured by a branch). It was raining all day, pretty heavily most times. I feel like it had to be someone in there house watching me put it here. I mean I care less about the jacket (kind of liked the gloves, could use on touchscreens). I would honestly care less if someone walked by, saw it, and valued it enough to take it. It is sticking in my craw a little bit though envisioning some crotchety codger drinking his coffee and deciding that this intrusion on 'his land' was too much to abide (not even sure on the ownership radius of the sidewalk, might even have been public land).
Do I pick up some jackets from Goodwill and leave one under that tree every time I jog by now? War of attrition? Put a dog turd in the pocket?

3.5, little lethargic last night, didn't have good hydration throughout the day (diet cokes and coffees all day). Feeling OK though. Longski Saturday morning. Then a maintenance week of 3-4 milers. Then 10K 'race week,' and of course by race I mean jogging slightly faster than normal (hopefully) with 15,000 other people.
