This might just be for ValeTudo because of your post about drifting South and East from your property and hitting the OC.
In any case, Cali-guys, I'd buy you a beer if you show up at the Marriott-Burbank Airport next week on Tues or Wednesday evening. There's an insurance thing there.
I should have put out the Fresno call when I was in Fresno in November. In any case, long shot cold beers, if we pretend to talk about bonds, construction, or insurance, I might just buy you five.

I am burned out on the tropical thing... want to go to a lake in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, or somewhere else scenic with good fishing. Would prefer to rent a cabin in a small town setting. Anyone have any suggestions?

I am too cheap for something like that. I would love to rent a cabin on a nice lake for a week for $2,500. I looked up lakes on line, but they all seem the same.

I'm not sure I have ever eaten a real cheesesteak... makes me want to go to Philly except I've heard there's a ton of black people there. I didn't see an over population of black people. If anything, driving through the hood, I saw more Mexicans. There is definitely a divide in the city. One block you are in the hood, the next block you are in the rich part of town. So long story short, you can go to Philly and stay in certain parts of town and you can have a semi black people free experience and still have some good cheesesteaks.

Anyone have any suggestions? Have you been to the Smoky mountains? They got some pretty good fishing and lots of trails with beautiful scenery....the whole national park thing. If you stay in Gatlinburg there's a ton of shit to do with the kids. Dollywood is also close by. You can get an awesome cabin for cheap. I just went in November and loved it. I feel you about being burned out with the tropics. Been to DR a couple of times and Mexico the last 2 years. The next 3 or 4 vacations will be here in the states. All scenic and some national parks....northeast, northwest and Midwest.

Sydney, Australia
Family Trip
I'll start with a negative. Cost of food/entertainment is a touch high. Real Estate is similar to San Francisco.
However, it was a great city. There are really multiple ways to do it. We did an Opera, and then primarily animal/sight-seeing-centric activities. We went to multiple zoos, a rain forest, and spent a little bit of time on the water. We did unfortunately miss whale watching season. We did however get some behind the scenes action at Taronga Zoo and actually get to pet a seal. At another zoo you can touch and iteract with Koalas, Roos, Wallabies, etc., which was also great.
We stayed in the Potts Point neighborhood for two weeks. We could have literally stayed within a 1 mile radius and not run out of places to eat and drink (though we didn't drink on this trip). There is a lot of Thai food, but really a lot of everything. Tons of small or botique types of eateries and cocktail spots and that is without even going down to the harbor.
We really only spent one day at the beach. However, there are several beach areas (Bondi was the best area in my book), that are also surrounded by shops, eateries and drink spots. You could easily make a weeks worth of high quality beach time just in Sydney.
We had the advantage of having my brother-in-law living there and setting up our airbnb place and he also acted as a guide of sorts. Lodging would have been a bigger cost restraint without an insider. There is enough to do in Sydney to make it an entire vacation, but you could pinpoint what you wanted to do and knock it out in 4-5 days if you want to extend the visit to Melbourne or Brisbane areas (or Gold Coast). Flights within Australia can be had pretty cheaply if you are flexible.
I should have pics, but I'm not great at getting pics on here. I'll add some at some point.

Nice Jim. My wife has always wanted to go there. Couple questions
1. What did you think about the people? 2. Was it hard to understand them when they talk? I have heard its hard to understand them. 3. How long was the flight?
Glad you had a good time

I personally thought the people were generally very nice, especially the Aussie's. There are a lot of Chinese visitors that seem to get a bad rap (and by my observations some of it is deserved). Right in Sydney you might run into a little bit of wealth to the point of making people feel like that they're really pretty special. I would say that is more the visitors than the residents though again.
I had no trouble understanding any Aussie's. There are some peculiarities and slang differences like there is no Ketchup (or Catsup), only tomato sauce. As dumb as it sounds, considering that Australian history is not secret, I was still surprised at how similar to "The States" it really was.
The flight there from LAX direct to Syd was 15.5 hours and on the way back it was about 13.5 hours. I was really mentally geared up for it to suck a ton. I was on Delta, and was in a 'preferred' seat but it wasn't even Comfort+ or Business Class or whatever they call it. I was also aided by sitting with a 6 year old and a slender wife so I could stretch out a bit. I thought there was enough room to get by, though I never really slept, dozed of on a few occasions for 30mins or so. Long story short, my expectation was that it would be horrible, and my perception was that it wasn't really that bad. Catch up on a lot of movies. I did hear that Virgin flights, which sometimes team with Delta, were even roomier and nicer than the Delta flights. For body-size reference, I was 6'0" 240 on the way there and 6'0" 250 on the way back.

I think I was just there long enough that some of my lbs converted to kgs. Also possible that I was in denial about pre-vacation poundage. We actually pounded the pavement hard enough that I could eat without much restraint and still break even. Once I got back to morning-nude weigh-ins I am pretty much break-even on the vacation.

Taking my rugrats to Disneyland in May for 3 days of hell. Went 2 years ago and came home fried and full of a new hatred for humanity.
This will make me lose any guilty feeling for my 10 day deer/elk hunt in November in Colorado.

I worked at Disney about 16 years ago, was a bartender in the Downtown area. Made me hate people with a passion.
And this is someone that worked pretty much all black clubs inland for years. That's a rough crowd, but is peanuts to Disney imo.

Bahamas are nice. Half Moon Cay was definitely my favorite. Laid back, super nice beach.. Too many people but they didn't bother me.
We went to Atlantis in Nassau. Holy fuck.. Never seen so many people in one place at one time. Fuck that. We walked out to the beach to get away from all the crazy raft carrying clowns.
It rained in Freeport, so we went to Senor Frogs and watched 18 year old girls twerk on stage. I had drinks and it was a good time.

Freeport, Nassau and Half moon cay. From what I remember, half moon was the private cruise island. Two weeks before we went on the cruise, my wife connected with an old highschool friend on FB...turns out her friend was living in Freeport. She picked us up at the cruise terminal and gave us a legit tour of Freeport. I took the "excursions" brochure from the ship and she took us to like 4 places from the brochure.

Yes, it was a Carnival cruise out of Orlando. Half Moon Cay is the private island stop. Very nice place.
Nassau was overcrowded and overpriced. Double Jack and Coke and a fucking fruity drink for $36. Fuck that.
Freeport might be really nice, but we didn't make it past the port due to rain.

Heading to Vegas for a long weekend May 10th-14th. I enjoy Vegas most than most. Pretty open schedule. Gonna catch U2 11th at TMobile Arena.
I’ve only ever really been for bachelor parties—so pools, clubs, gambling. With an open schedule feel free to send any restaurant or activity suggjestions my way (I know about the delishisness of Hash House).

Had the most amazing time at Disneyworld with my sister. We went to all four Disney Parks in Orlando (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios). I hadn't been since I was seven, so obviously almost everything was new to me. The best ride by far, and the best experience overall was the Pandora: Flight of Passage ride at Animal Kingdom. We got to ride it twice, and it was just breathtaking both times. It's hard to describe the ride, and not even the youtube videos really do the whole experience justice, but it's worth whatever wait there happens to be. The food at the World Showcase at Epcot was good. Other than that, the food was meh, but that's not why we went to Disney, so whatever. I had a blast. I have to exclude the "Be Our Guest" meal at the Beast's castle from that overall generalization. It was delicious. Pirates of the Carribean is still my favorite ride at Magic Kingdom, although Space Mountain is still fun. Star Tours at Hollywood Studios was really cool. I don't think that the Toy Story ride was quite worth the long wait, but it was fun. The nighttime light shows were all great. My favorite was the one at Cinderella's Castle at Magic Kingdom, but the Fantasmic show at Hollywood Studios was amazing, even though my sister and I had close seats and got sprayed by water almost the whole time. My sister's best friend is an annual pass holder, and she knows all the parks well. She put together a packed itinerary for all four parks for us. We stayed from open to close every day. I had sooo much fun. I wasn't thrilled with the All Star Music Resort, but we didn't spend enough time in the room to really make it an issue, except for the last night when our Magic Bands wouldn't work, and we had in impromptu picnic with bourbon and wine outside the room while waiting for someone to let us in. The Mickey's Magical Express from the airport to the resort was cool and convenient, as were the shuttles to/from the parks.

Your trip sounds great... throw in 2 seven year olds and 2 four year olds and it becomes much less great for the adults. It's fun to see the kids have a great time, but you are constantly on edge watching out for shitheads and walking the fine line of under-stimulation and over-stimulation for the kids.

Just booked a nice little multi state trip.
Going to hit San Francisco, Denver and South Dakota. For the first leg of the trip, my mom, aunt and my wife will go to SF, a quick day in Denver and then driving up to mount Rushmore. After that, my mom and aunt will go back to NY and the wife and I will stay for 4 more days in Colorado.
Now that my mom is older, I've been trying to take her to her bucket list trips in the US. She has surprised me with her choices. A couple of years ago, took her to San Diego, LA and Vegas. New years in Vegas was on her list. Mount Rushmore and SF were next of her list....so we doing this for mothers days week. She is super stoked. The cool thing is that the wife and I will also get some alone time those last 4 days in Denver. Eveyone is happy.
Mom is serious about her bucket list travels. Im taking care of the US trips, but in the last 5 years she has gone all over internationally. Italy, France, the UK, Spain, Switzerland, Morroco, Israel and some others i can't remember. Awesome to see her enjoying her later years.

Speaking of the last 4 days in Denver, check out the view on this cabin I rented for my wife and I. But aside from the view, the part that really sealed the deal while booking it were those lines circled in the last two pictures.....recreational weed law is Colorado!
