Here's another old thread coming back to life from the old forum. Its been a while, so maybe some of you changed careers.
Was Jackel unemployed back then too?
No need to mention your employer if you dont want to. Just a general description of how you earn your bread.
I am a computer programmer. Not the fun kind. No games, no websites, no cool graphics, just number crunching. I work on Mainframe computers the size of a fridge that cost millions of dollars. Currently i work for a company that process credit card transactions for half the walmarts in the US, most of the Starbucks and All the Home depots among thousands of smaller clients.
We average about 100 million transactions a day....thats about 1,100 credit card swipes a second. During the holidays that number will spike to close to 200 million transactions a day.
Fast paced, sometimes stressful, but the pay is good. Before this job, i spent 14 years working in Mutual funds accounting. Still with mainframe computers. Being a programmer is the only job I've ever had in my adult life after college since the year 2000.......oh yeah, i also kind of helped save the world back during Y2K. First assignment of my career; Change a bunch of programs to use a 4 digit year.

Realtor, soon to be Broker Property manager Property maintenance and remodeling Coin op car wash maintenance Vacation Rentals
And I still do grow room pest and disease preventative maintenance and disaster recovery. Of all the things I thought 10-15 years ago would still make me decent coin in the weed industry, me having to correct my own fuckups would have been last on my list. Turns out lots of these fuckers can be quite lazy.

I own a Energy Efficiency company. I'm a contractor for a few different utility companies. I try to save homeowners money on their electric bills. I run a blower door test on the house. If the house is drafty, I'll weatherstrip the doors, windows. Just try to find where the air is coming in from and seal it up. I also run a duct blaster test. That test will tell me how leaking the duct system is (most systems run over 20% air loss) I find where the leaks are and fix it. I also add insulation into the attic. I install LED lighbulbs, energy saving showerheads, aerators. Install energy saving power strips.
I do all of that at no cost to the customer. The utility company pays me to do it.
Here is a list of different areas I work in
DFW area (thought I may not do it in 2017) Beaumont Tx Lake Charles LA Magnolia AR (and surrounding areas) Texarkana TX Hope AR Fort Smith AR Fayetteville AR
Here is a commercial I did with one of the electric companies.
I'm the guy in the blue shirt. Yeah, yeah I know. I have movie star good looks haha

I am a travel agent. This year I did 1.5 million in gross sales giving my company $165,000 in revenue. I'm currently ranked number 10 out of 700 agents in Southern California. This is the biggest year I've had.

I WAS a CAD (computer aided design) designer for a lot of automotive and heavy-equipment firms thru my career, working mostly as a contractor for JI Case, Ford/Visteon, GM and a few Chrysler programs while employed by local Detroit area jobshops. Later, after Visteon laid us all off prior to a bankruptcy filing, I did some interesting work on the target-missile program for the Patriot missile at Orbital Sciences in AZ. Also did drawing- update work on the Space Shuttle program at ATK in UT, which is now merged with the aforementioned Orbital Sci.
Later, after the 2009 bloodbath here in Detroit, I worked at Aerojet in VA for five weeks (more Space Shuttle stuff) until Obama cancelled that program for good in May 2010. No, that's not why I hated the guy; the move was fiscally necessary. I later returned to Aerojet in 2011 -- a year later -- and worked there for eight months. But I retired in 2013 after tiring of battling the age discrimination that exists....and turning down some poor-paying road assignments. Spent most of my career as a contractor and never regretted it. Now retired and dying of boredom. It beats workin' though.

I'm a supervisor for an insurance company for our underwriting department. That's sounds more important that what it is--there are 4 other supervisors under 2 managers.
Basically managing 8 UW floor agents--taking in occasional projects.

General contractor doing mostly high end residential homes in San Francisco and North. I have an MBA in Business Finance, which I hope to put to use later in life as I don't want to work in Construction forever. I also have some rentals.

I'm a white guy. Everything I have is because of my skin color. Best job in the country. Oh and I'm the son of a wealthy guy so everything else I have is because of him. I used to be involved with the family real estate business.
Now I grow weed.

I'm a little hard to tack down. I do a lot of little stuff. My primary, day-to-day, is crossfit. I own two and we're opening a third location in 2017. All along the I-35 corridor from OKC to Moore to Norman, each about 15 min south of the previous. It's solid revenue and a lot of fun, but also allows for a great deal of personal freedom and flexibility where I can pursue other projects. I illustrate for children's books, I day trade, I run a power washing business, I'm looking at building a wedding venue "The Barn", occasionally we find old cars or lightly damaged cars at auctions and do some fixing-up and resell at profit, I also, even less often, buy and develop land and resell at profit (did a huge one in Guthrie a few years ago that will give me monthly payouts for the next 7 years/did another one in Bartlesville this year), and just in general always looking to get my fingers into pies.

Yes sir. NX. It was probably my company or one of the big three subsea companies here in Houston. In 2012, things were booming and you could literally land 3-4 jobs in a few weeks. Now, however, with the collapse of oil, things have went to total shit. I have friends and ex-coworkers that have been out of a job for over a year. I have been through 6 layoffs in two years and we have another coming in the next week or so. I totally see age discrimination like you mentioned, too. I am about to be 43 so I don’t feel it much but I have seen really great senior guys that are getting cut because of age/salary. Its stressful that I will have a target on my back sooner than later.
Anyway, have you used NX? I came from a SolidWorks/AutoCAD background and learning NX was a total PITA. I am used to it now (5 years using it) but it took months before I felt comfortable and efficient.
***after rereading your original post, I see you came from automotive so you probably came from NX. I know it's used a lot up there. We hired a lot of people from the automotive industry when that busted and oil was booming.

CNC machinist/programmer for General Electric. Our plant is closing down in the next 12-18 months so i'll be job hunting soon as I will only be receiving about 2 months severance pay. Jobs are scarce in my area so I think it would be best to beat the competition and start looking soon.

I am a Police Officer, Captain to be exact. I work for a small department of about 40 Officers just north of Memphis,TN. I have been here for 21 years and I am only 40. I have told some of the people around that I am quitting soon and I was informed that after this long it is no longer called "quitting". It is called retiring. Some of you may know me from the old forum as Jblack76. I did have a few amateur MMA fights 12-2. Also a couple Pro fights 0-2 last fight was in Bellator, got my ass whooped so I figured it was time to stop. I teach fitness kickboxing and circuit classes at a gym (www.crosskickgym.com) 4 days a week for fun. Still roll on the regular just to make sure I get clowned. Plus I would prefer not to get my ass whooped at work. Some of you guys have awesome jobs.

Call Centerpoint (your elec company) and ask for the Energy Efficiency department. They can get you to a contractor.
