Mark Hamill has been shitting on the latest Star Wars films pretty hard. Said the director aND him could not fundamentally disagree more with how Luke is portrayed in the latest installment. I was a huge fan of The Force Awakens and apparently neither was Mark. Or at least not for his part in it. We will see.

Masterminds:
Fucking zero/10. Any one of the forum members could have made a better movie. Just absolutely terrible, stupid, in every way. Every single person involved with this ,voice shit the bed. Writing was a zero, all actors' characters hackneyed, awful, overdone, ridiculous without being funny. Only one who turned out decently was the tall blonde honey

Moana - 8.75 of 10.
Yeah, that Moana. I loved it. Go fuck yourself. Brilliant blend of adventure and fantasy with a touch of comedy. Crisp pace as we explore a mystical ancient Polynesian mythos. The Rock is unreal. Pure charisma. Extremely likable characters with enough depth and nuance to make it sophisticated and enjoyable for adults. All of the characters have this same treatment -- gradients of good and bad, nothing is simple, nothing is what it seems.

Logan.
Like always, late to seeing this one. Liked to see the r rated version of wolverine and liked seeing his struggles with age and illness. Really liked this one. The ending of two key characyers seemed a bit rushed. And there wasn't a really good villain figure. But the more gritty language as well as the lack of instant healing powers gave the film an oddly more realistic feel to it. Far more realistic than any other Logan I've seen on screen.
4/5
The enivitable defeat of mister and Pete
IFC type film depicting a young 13 year old in inner city NY whose drug addicted prostitue mom gets locked up away from him one summer. He and a younger friend who is also a drug orphan struggle to survive and avoid juvenile authorities.
This one was decent. A few heart wrenching moments . A few that were over done of course. Good acting by the main character. Typical neighborhood characters. Worth a watch if you liked films such as fresh.
3.5/5.

The accountant.
I went in expecting this to be as dumb as smokey and the bandit, and it overperformed in that regard. Even as a bonus it included that despicable actress who, to me, appears to have been altered by plastic surgery from her original, natural, resemblance to Marty Feldman. She is like Emma Stone, in that her presence usually means that the movie is going to be so bad as to make you hate everyone involved.
Predictable in every single, solitary, stupid way. Only unpredictable as far as the action scenes were a LOT lamer than I would have predicted, and also by being so predictable that it's unpredictable. You're like "no no, they're not going to go for that, it would be too predictable" and then surprise -that's exactly what they do

Castlevania - 8.5 of 10.
Netflix has produced an original series (4-pt animation) based on the classic Castlevania franchise. From a pure nostalgia perspective, a huge win right off the bad. They also went hyper graphic with the violence and adult themes, almost to the point of shocking gore in a few scenes, frequent profanity, some strong anti-church themes, etc. This is not a kid's cartoon. That future-tech/desolation aesthetic similar to the Vampire Hunter D series is in full effect and works great. Episodes are short - 20-25 min - and the plot advances at a brisk but organized clip. Really wanted to see another 4 episodes immediately.

Wonder Woman
Went in expecting a pretty good film. Wife was enthusiastically looking foward to it as well.
I liked the mythology aspect and background story. Liked the training as well.
I figured out "the villain twist" pretty early on.
And yes, I kinda liked the tried and true, "mortals have love. That is what makes them admirable" messages. Definitely nothing original ... it's been played out in Countless films involving gods before.
The combat scenes were something that didn't sit well w me for some reason. We see vulnerability of the amazons on the island scene. And WW is also not able to save the day then. And they faced about 40 guys w bolt action rifles. But then... she can charge a trench line and singlehandedly take on machine gun nexts and mortars?
Would have liked to have seen a touch more consistency.... either she kicks more ass on the island, or relies more on allied big guns on the western front.
The jokes were pretty weak I thought.
And I became annoyed at the unnecessary blaringly forced "product placement PC messages" at every corner. I'm sorry...but 1918 London was a pretty damn homogenous city. And the messages of the plight of the native Americans as well as the Pakistani immigrant actor and the placement of turbans at every corner scene in the city got old quick.
The one story that could have been explored more was the Scottish ptsd story... and it was just dropped. I did like that actor though. Recognized him from train spotting and he was the guy who lost his hearing in black hawk down as well. One of the better non batman D.C. Films. Although that's not exactly saying much.
Having just finished Fargo, I personally enjoyed watching some similarly patterned speeches for thewlis.
Overall.... still can't quite give it a 3.5. I give it a 3/5.
Will not see justice league. Suspect there will be even more PC insertions there... as well as more blatant marvel avengers like coat tailing

Passengers
7.5/10
It was a pretty good movie. The ending was a little much but given the circumstances they didn't have a lot of options.

Its funny though. When I was a kid, I can remember watching the Gooiness over and over. Watch, rewind, repeat. Until the VHS tape broke

The Shallows... Uhmmmm.... well it starts off pretty strong. GORGEOUS scenery and fantastic cinematography. Absolutely beautiful. Looks to be a very relatable story of survival. They went a little far with the Shark's behavior, but not beyond the pale. Still believable enough. ...but then the last 20 or so minutes happened, and the shark story jumps the shark. I was left dumbfounded, almost like being rick rolled. JAWS morphed into Deep Blue SHarknado 5 Yea, they definitely butchered a decent shark flick with the ending. I heard the new Mandy Moore Shark movie is better.

Went on a little bender of movies this week's d.
Get Out. 8.5/10 I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I was going into thinking it will be some horror/suspense that couldn't help to spatter in social commentary on systemic racism and blah, blah, blah. They had like one scene and the rest was white people trying not to act racist but coming off more racist. It was a good mixture of suspense and comic relief without being forced. Beginning was slow but not boring, kept your attention with comic relief and the actors made you feel the awkwardness which made it funny and uncomfortable to watch (in a cringy way). Can't say it is a "twist ending as you know something is up but there is a little twist at the end. Good flick. No real complaints overall.
A Cure for Wellness 6.5/10 It was an okay flick. Creepy, not really scary and massively slow starter. Also didn't make a lot of sense about his they were being "cured." Ending was okay. Luckily it was a Redbox.
Pixels 7/10
2015 Adam Sandler movie. One of his better movies as of late and still no Happy Gilmore or Billy Madison, more like a Water Boy. Some corny jokes but still good for what it was.

Probably because most of it is Japanese, and I find their story telling to usually be too convoluted and just flat out lacking. It's almost like you need to flip a switch and change to a child-like mentality to really get in to those things. This though was not japanese, despite a very similar look, and the writing and voice acting was so damn good. I would give it about an 8 to an 8.5 and yeah, I just count it as a movie. Four short episodes is not a TV series, but I get why they did it that way. Because they want to do it as such from here on out. This was just a test run. And I say it passed with flying colors. Just realized I haven't reviewed a movie in a while. I have a few I need to see now with Baby Driver and Spider Man out and Apes 3 and Dunkirk coming soon. I need to get back on my game here

I couldn't remember the Castlevania storyline, did dracula really end up becoming evil after the church did what it did (to keep spoiler free even though it happens within 5 minutes of the 1st episode)? I enjoyed it and can't wait for season 2.

Plus, after I was done, I saw the One Punch Man was on Netflix so I got to watch an episode of that. It is actually fucking dumb. I will watch the entire first season though. Just to say I did plus it has some Titan movie I will watch. Wonder if it has Ghost in a shell since I never saw it.

One Punch Man is good, but it takes some adjusting. It's very post-modern, anti-hero, etc.
Attack on Titan is much better, and has season two available on Crunchy Roll right now.
Knights of Sedonia is the best of the lot.
Gargantia on the Versefirous Planet is a similar series to Sedonia, also quite good.
The first of the three Berzerk films is on Netflix, and all three are superb and must-watch.
Gantz: 0 is also on Netflix, and is probably the best of all the Gantz adaptations. Really wild shit there. Very adult.
As a youth I spent . . . fuck me . . . hundreds of hours? . . . playing Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest and Castlevania 64. To see it brought to life is just good clean fun. To see that adaptation done well, hyper graphic, adult-oriented with good writing, voice work, and animation is just fantastic.

I need to get back on my game here I have it in reverse. This was obviously created for the american market so people who have no anime background can be amazed with a watered-down version. I made a review in the other thread. The frame rate is off & lacking which affects the totality of the series from a technical standpoint. The story is a bit subpar to most standard anime fare. Black Swan = Perfect Blue Paprika = Inception LOL@ "child like mentality".

Rogue One just hit Netflix and I have to say . . . not nearly as good the 2nd time around. Just removing yourself from that theater experience and sitting down for a sober, non-emotional viewing . . . yeesh, this thing is a good 25-30 min too long, convoluted, slow at times, and then inexplicably FFWDs over the best parts leaving me wanting more. Frankly, in that regard, it's VERY much like the latest Ridley Scott films. Some brilliant, exciting concepts just glossed over so we can then spend 20 min mucking around in shit that I could not care less about and really does nothing to advance the plot. Frankly, that's almost an editing problem more than anything else. But Rogue One suffers from it immensely. Her father and her adopted father are scarce, and that is fucking criminal film making. It's a little like, oh, I don't know, having Guy Pierce in Prometheus . . . for 45 seconds in old age make-up. I mean, wtf are we doing here? Vader at the absolute height of his power, dealing with incredible injuries, living in a mysterious compound with a medical pod, largely in solitude, what a fascinating peek into one of the most elusive and, oh . . . just 2 min of screen time, so we can hurry up and get to a full work-up on some bratty Empire middle management guy with a Napoleon complex.
I don't see myself sitting through this one again. But it's tragic, because it's an important part of the story with some GREAT characters, GREAT back story, history, the kiber mines, the resistance, a great concept for how that weakness in the Death Star came about, just some truly great material, buried to the points it's almost lost in this 3 hour shit show. That actually got to be a chore to get through at one or two points.

I'm the same way. Greatly prefer features to series. Gartantia and Sedonia are both exceptionally good series on Netflix, and Castlevania is off to a really, really good start, but 9 times out of 10, I want the feature film.
Cattlevania's main character, Trevor, is voiced by the head dwarf in "the Hobbit". Dracula is also voiced by one of the dwarfs. It's heavily influenced by Berzerk, which is easily one of the top anime trilogies out there.
Vampire Hunter D and the sequel, Bloodlust would fit into that category as well.
Hyper violent, gory, complex story telling, beautiful art, cinematography, etc.
Akira, Spirited Away, Princess Monanoke, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, etc. Phenomenal feature films.
Here's some examples of the style and substance of what I'm talking about, in short form:
