Anyone see old Franklin out there reffing on Saturday night? It was his UFC debut reffing - said he had to ref 500 fights before they would let him do a UFC event.
Also - Saturday's event marked the return of Josh Rosenthal after being sentenced to 37 months in the Federal Pen. - Pretty cool to have both these guys back in the Octagon!

I've never heard of either of these guys. You've never heard of Dewey Franklin Trigg III? lol... wow... I guess it isnt fair to expect the 'newer fans' (n00bs) to know about anything that happened before UFC 196.

Im curious - who else on here is only familiar with "The McGregor Era' of MMA? We should probably have a pinned post on the board with a brief history of the sport. Who the big names were back in the day... some legendary fight recs... facts about the evolution of the sport... you know, something to help the new guys out with getting up to speed.

n00b report for Josh:
Josh Rosenthal was one of the more well known refs in the sport who was also considered one of the best. It used to be Big John > Herb Dean > Josh Rosenthal > Mario Yammasaki as the best refs in the sport.
Back in 2013 PME (Pre McGregor Era) Josh was busted for a huge grow operation and went to jail. Now he's back.

I agree or something to maybe welcome the Bellator refugees. Gkad Trigg still involved in MMA. More fighters should turn into refs.

Hey Loco - you should google "Chuck Liddell" and watch some of his old fights. Guy was a pioneer for the sport. I'll try to think of some other good fighters who can check out as well.
Anyone else have some fighter recs for Loco?

He knew I was a fan of the sport and was trying to convince me I need to watch more Bellator and how they have a lot of top talent right now. He asked if I had "ever heard of the Bellator fighter by the name of 'Congo'" and then went on to tell me what a "monster" the guy is. SMH...

I'm wondering if the reason that isn't happening is because a lot of ex-fighters either own gyms, train people at gyms, or have some sort of an interest in gyms or training new fighters and any of that sort of involvement could cause some perceived conflicts in them reffing current fighters? Or maybe reffing just generally doesn't pay shit and they're not interested?

Anyone else have some fighter recs for Loco? Frank Shamrock. His fight against Tito in 99' was probably one of the first "blockbuster" MMA fights under the UFC.

I just looked these guys up and they’re not that great. Mainly just brawlers with no real skills. Not one of them has anything on guys like Diaz or Stipe.

Bunch of fucking n00bs.....Frank was practically an OD regular (by way of association). He was boys with Gooze, old school OD member, which later left to Junkie to host that radio show. Frank as a co host for a while.
There was also that famous story about Buffdaddy getting all butt hurt when he offered Trigg a protein bar and he declined.
EPKenpo was close to Frank and used to post stories about them hanging out.
Then there was the whole Hughes/Trigg drama for a while.

Missed the Buff:protein bar though!

Houston Alexander has a dick shaped head. The Jardine ko. Lhw back then was a murderers row of people that would brawl, and Houston destroyed a top 10 guy in seconds on 2 days notice. I think his second fight he also won quickly by ko and the hype just grew. People wanted to see him fight the other brawlers to see how he performed

Anyone else have some fighter recs for Loco? There was a guy named Royce Gracie who had some fights a long time ago. They say he won a few belts early on but he never fought McGregor so I think he was probably a pussy.

Him vs Kimbo actually should have been a fun brawl on paper, but boy did that end up sucking in reality cause both (especially Houston) avoided the fight.

I don't know why this reminded me of a time I got into a random discussion at a bar a few years ago with some WWE fan who loved Tank but seemed to know nearly nothing about MMA. He was all about talking about WWE but when I shifted the conversation to MMA he said "yeah, Tank Abbot was actually the best fighter." Then I was like "umm, no, not really, he lost a lot, never held a belt and was mostly just good because of his power." And he went "well Tank was really good at strategy cause he majored in war and military history in college." I was like, "damn, I didn't know that, but I don't think it translated that well to the cage." Then he was like "yeah, I'm a fighter too." I didn't say anything more after that. I was thinking "yeah, you sure sound like a fighter and someone with a lot of MMA knowledge" lol. Funny things random people say about MMA.
