I thought i was seeing things: Bisping was going to fight so soon after being choked out by GSP just 3 weeks prior. Folks criticize CSAC, and our commission is not perfect. However, when someone is choked out they get a 30/45 suspension , at a minimum. This is the minimum given for any TKO/KO loss. What does that mean? After the competition, pleading goes on with the athlete and his /her coaches "please avoid any hard training and especially anything that could result in even minor head trauma, and no competition for 45 days. Anywhere there is commission, that should be honored. In the past couple of years, even tribal MMA organizations have honored that. The UFC certainly knew that. My interactions with a small number of visiting Chinese officials, indicate they know that to. Ironically enough , I am working the Fresno UFC fight night in two weeks, and am looking forward to a discussion with UFC officials on how this bout took place. Very, very bad look for the UFC,and especially its medical staff.

There is an honouor system that as far as I know hasn't been broken yet in regards to positive PED tests (though Alabama at one point said they'd still hold events if they didn't pop under their state testing), but there have been many fighters on mandatory medical for one state fighting in another as soon as three days later. Been this way since day one. You don't usually see it in the UFC, but nothing done was "wrong".

Agree, Gary. Very strange. Would love to hear how the UFC staff responds as I bet many of them share your opinion.

Thanks for the post, Gary.
STFU, Jackel.
Bisping got a 30-day medical suspension from the New York State AC. Apparently those can be waived with a doctor's approval, which Bisping said he got. But I certainly understand that your point, Gary, isn't necessarily whether this was a technical violation of applicable rules, but instead you're trying to raise the question of why would the UFC would allow this to go forward against what seems like common sense and their prior practices.
Anyway, I didn't see a lot of press on the issue of Bisping's medical suspension following the GSP fight, but this is from a Rolling Stone article before the Gastelum fight:
The elephant in the room, however, is whether Bisping's health is really as good as he claims. Bisping suffered multiple facial lacerations, was knocked down with a punch and also choked unconscious by St-Pierre at UFC 217. He was given a 30-day medical suspension by the New York State Athletic Commission, which sanctioned the event, for damaged sustained in the contest.
UFC Fight Night 122, of course, comes just 21 says after Bisping vs. St-Pierre. Medical suspensions are largely precautionary and can be waved with a doctor's clearance, which Bisping says he's received. Because of that, Bisping is adamant there should be no concerns about the status of his health going into fight night.
"I'm physically, 100 percent, A-OK, totally fine," Bisping says. "It's a walk in the park. I'm cleared medically, but the UFC just wanted to make sure that I'm fine, which I am, and that's that."

If a doctor cleared him to fight, then 100% of the liability and responsibility fall on that doctor.
Gary - Thanks for your perspective. Always appreciate your input!

This was a decision based on money.

Seems crazy that anyone is surprised by this.. That was my point earlier, they've been doing this for years because there is nothing forcing anyone to abide by another state's rules. It is one of the reasons there are calls for a national athletic commission for MMA.

I can only speak for California: for a TKO/KO/"going to sleep" during a fight: the minimum suspension for the next competition is 45 days. There is no overturn possible by any doc, or theoretically , any commission. You can try to appeal to CSAC, but it will take a Lot longer to get a hearing, than 45 days.

As far as I know, there has yet to be any interstate compacts linking the athletic commissions rulings. The only incentive for a fighter not to fight in another state while suspended is some of the states will perma-ban you from fighting in their state if you fight for another commission while under a ban by theirs.
