I'm a bit in a daze at the moment.
I got a call from my aunt this morning. Her first cousin Richie and his wife Kathy died in a plane crash today. Richie is my 2nd cousin, but because he's 30 years older than me, he always went by uncle Richie and his wife aunt Kathy.
They were flying their single engine Piper from Hamburg, NY airport to St. Mary's, PA airport. This something they did regularly with a group of friends to go have breakfast. There were 6 planes. Two collided. They don't know what happened yet. NTSB is supposed to be on scene tomorrow to start investigating.
This is really surreal...
Adding to the tragedy, Richie's sister Susie lost her daughter in a brutal car crash back in 1997. She was at a stop sign and the person coming from the other direction did not stop at the stop sign, launched over a truck that had the right of way, sheered off the roof of her car. She died instantly. The plane crashed in the same block where she died in 1997.
They haven't been publicly identified but it's a very small community. When my family heard about it, they were very concerned because they knew he was flying today. He'd actually called that morning and asked Susie's husband if he wanted to go, because his wife didn't really want to go, but he said no, he had stuff to do. When they heard of the small crash they headed to the crash site and new right away that it was his aircraft. After speaking with the Sheriff on scene as well as the airport where they departed from, it was confirmed.
I am really sad. I'm also bewildered at how random and fucked up life really is. They worked really hard, raised a great daughter, retired nicely, and had a sailboat and airplane. He'd been flying for 15 years. And in the blink of an eye, all gone.
