I would put the Star Wars franchise undoubtedly #1 I would include the Lord of the Rings franchise
Would argue the 1976 King Kong with Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange is top 25 (best Kong film ever made) Would argue 1954 Them was a game changer and excellent flick worthy of top 25 status
I would bounce the Island for Kong I would bounce Donnie Darko for Them
Solid list, otherwise.

I would include the Lord of the Rings franchise Lord of the Rings isn't Sci Fi. I like the list, something about the order seems off but that mostly preference. A few thoughts - I feel like Contact hovers just outside the top 25
- The Matrix has been done thru other mediums many times over a long time, but I think from a movie standpoint, Dark City from the year before does more for the concept, and maybe should replace it on the list.
- I'd take Clockwork Orange off, I don't really consider it so much Sci-Fi as more a thought piece on what we were actually attempting at the time.
- Galaxy Quest. We can put that Clockwork's place.
- The Andromeda Strain. Still holds up today, still great by today's standard, and basically started a sub-genre itself.
- Mad Max seems more dystopian with normal technology than Sci Fi.
Now for the surprising glaring oversight. One of the best, and most influential SciFi movies ever made (if it wasn't for it, BTTF would never have been done, and even took the flux capacitor from it)..
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension

Unless I missed one, not to include anything by David Cronenberg is just a crime.
Videodrome with James Woods IMO should be in there, as well as Scanners.
The original Alien HAS to be in there and I'm wondering if maybe it slipped your mind.
I also have always considered Total Recall one of my all time favorite movies and I think it deserves to be in there as much as The Terminator movies which I also agree on.
I know Jurassic Park was a block buster, but goddamn I could never stand it for some reason.
While I might not include them, I liked both reading and watching the Divergent series movies/books, though the books were better, so I MIGHT include them.
The Abyss was good, so was The Cave and Event Horizon but I'm not sure I'd include one.
I saw a really good one the other day based on a book but can't remember what it was called but I'll mention it if it comes to mind.
There were a lot of good old ones from the 60s and 70s.
I would probably also include The Thing (not the original black and white one but the one from the 80s).
There's a lot that are slipping my mind.

The dialog is superb, down-to-earth, grade A stuff imo, just hyper-real, no dramatization or theatrics. The characters and atmosphere are fleshed out effortlessly. The movie itself is very grounded in reality all things considered. The action scenes are simplistic in nature but also extremely effective in execution, taking place on a terrain where there isn't much to work with. Desert sand, boulders and some houses, that's about it. Oh, and the monsters? They're underground 90% of the time. Now, make a movie, go!
There's really nothing "unbelievable" in the movie either. Again, it's pretty grounded. Bunch of desert folk gradually encountering something never seen before. I have to think it plays out pretty closely to how it would irl, except everyone probably eventually dies irl, but thrown in are some imagination, heroics, luck and charm to complete a pretty solid, feel good sci-fi flick.

No original Tron? Fuck you and your "list" My "as an adult" rewatches of Tron have not gone super well. Def a cult classic. Def a top 40 sci fi flick, but I just can't justify a top 25 for it. I may even slightly prefer the reboot in terms of repeat watchability.

Anyone who know me knows I'm a huge, huge Lynch fan, but Dune is just far too self indulgent and tedious to crack the top 25. It's six hours too long. Has some iconic, epic moments, a dense mythology, but it's a bit of a chore at times, too. Again, for me, this is an easy top 40 but just not quite top 25.

I love the inclusion of Tremors, spelling error and all. It's a lot like Back to the Future for me. A bit campy, some gags, creature feature, but it's just almost perfect and doesn't try to be anything it's not. Full of charm, charisma, personality, a killer cast with great dialogue, humor, tension, pace, and build-up. I could watch Tremors 100 times and still enjoy it.

Can we just put all Philip K. Dick stories on film on the list and call it a day?

A lot of you guys are suggesting things that I have on my horror list. Alien, the Thing, etc. Easy locks for top 5 all time horror flicks. I actually did struggle with Total Recall quite a bit and I'd also consider Scanners a bubble pick, but not a top 25. It's well within the top 40 no doubt at all.

Can we just put all Philip K. Dick stories on film on the list and call it a day? For some reason that reminds me of a conversation I had last week with Jess about how I thought that Robert J Sawyer's books would make for amazing movies if they found the right person to adapt them. The Terminal Experiment Illegal Alien Calculating God (holy shit this one would give people a mind trip, almost makes me think of what Prometheus could have been) The Neanderthal Parallax would make an interesting trilogy or series.

I want to mention a few - Sunshine - Event Horizon - Looper- Snowpiercer - Guardians of the Galaxy All outstanding suggestions. The bolded items made their way onto and off of this list 2-3 times. Many of these would be within 5-10 spots of the top 25. Frankly, I kept Looper off because of 12 Monkeys, another time travel flick with Bruce. Horizon is . . . hell, maybe 26 or 28. Just right there.

some random thoughts, mostly on the top 10:
- i thought the back to future at 1 was a joke, but i haven't seen anything since to suggest that. don't get me wrong, it's a good movie. maybe it's definition of "sci-fi" is what i'm struggling most with. i guess i've always viewed sci-fi as a mostly serious type movie. for what it is, guardians is better in every way imo. better visuals, better acting, the humorous parts are more funny, better score (yes, i get that back to the future's score was appropriate for it's day).
- i love the inclusion of matrix. yes, i can't stand keanu as much as the next guy (probably the worst actor of our time), but the story, the visuals, the acting (other than keanu) and the score (a big piece of the puzzle for me), were all on point.
- predator is great. must've seen it 30+ times. one of those movies where if it's on, i'll watch it. haven't seen the mad max reboot, but it's on my list.
- i've only seen blade runner once and it was many years ago. from what i remember it was pretty ho-hum. dull, drab visuals. dialog was lacking. i always thought it's cult status made it overrated. maybe it's worth a second look.
- inception was brilliant and if you count it as sci-fi, it definitely needs to be top 10.
- first jj abrams star trek movie was incredible and warrants top 25 consideration.
- of the more recent movies, martian is great and would definitely be in my top 15, if not top 10. i haven't seen most of the recent crop of highly rated sci-fi flics. one i definitely need to check out is moon.
i also loved gattaca bobo.

If any Star Trek movie belongs on Top 25, I'd argue it would be First Contact. BTTF 1 was just brilliantly written and yeah the tone of it makes you forget it is SciFi. There is a reason that is one of the films you study in film class now. However if you were thinking comedy sci fi as a sub-genre, I'd pick Galaxy Quest first easily. As for the Matrix, I really really think Dark City should take the Matrix's place on almost every list that the Matrix makes. And seriously Buckaroo Banzai.

Back to the Future is an almost perfect movie. It is absolutely not a joke. And a movie about time travel by definition has to be sci-fi, with the possible exception of it bleeding over into horror (Time Crimes).

Can you explain why Prometheus is not on the list? I'll wait bro. I'll bet it's excluded because it sucked donkey balls and Baph knows it.
Everyone associated with it should be chained to a cliff and suffer daily disembowelment by a bird of prey, much like the "real" Prometheus the Fire Bringer.
....with no dramatic rescue by Hercules either.
