www.mmafighting.com/2016/9/19/12976442/cris-cyborg-still-needs-to-lose-24-pounds-before-friday-weigh-inThe last time Incivta featherweight champion Cris Cyborg had to make the cut to 140 pounds was a harrowing affair. Justino looked gaunt and frail on the scales the day before her swift UFC 198 victory over Leslie Smith. This week doesn't look like it's going to be any better for the fighter many consider the best women's pound-for-pound fighter in the world. "Cyborg" will meet the unheralded Lina Lansberg on Saturday in Brasilia, Brazil, once again meeting at a 140-pound catchweight. But Justino said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour that as of Monday, she's still got an astonishing 24 pounds to cut before Friday's weigh-ins. "I fly from America to Brazil [five days ago] 168 pounds," Justino said. "Today, I wake up 165." Last time out, Justino had a 12-week camp and entered fight week at 153. This time around, though, she's had eight weeks to prepare, and there's been one big difference: According to "Cyborg," she's been on birth control, which has caused her to retain water weight. "In this camp, my nutrition coach, he starts giving to me birth control, and I never take this in my life, and I take this three months, every day," Justino said. "My coach says it will be good for me, I believe in him, and, man I fly from America to Brazil 168 pounds. My body will hold more water than normal, and I don't think this will really help my body." Justino said she's done everything by the book for this camp, but simply hasn't been able to drop the weight, never getting down to 150 at any point. "This camp I don't touch 150," she said. "It's really scary, I look in the mirror, I trained double and I don't know why I don't touch '50. Just something different in this camp is I take birth control. Last fight, I make 140, it was successful." Justino said that her doctor has advised against going this route again. While Justino, who has talked about getting down to 140 to do superfights with some of the top bantamweight names, won't rule out another drop to 140, she says things need to change before she attempts it again. "I don't want to say I'll never fight 140 again, that's probably not true," Cyborg said. "But a lot of things have to change. If I make 140, I sacrifice a lot of things in my life, my diet, my training, my thyroid, its insane to make 140, I think a lot of things have to be put on the table before I make 140 again."

Why would her nutrition coach start her on birth control before a camp, knowing she already has issues making weight at 140?

I don't understand at all why birth control pills would be recommended by a nutritionist. I am baffled by that.

So she doesn't have menstrual issues around fight time and is able to compete at her best possible level? Also, maybe taking them as a preemptive challenge to a high-T test since they can cause the results to be skewed supposedly? Also the high-progestin birth control methods increase endurance for training.

If instead of taking the placebo week you go straight onto the next group of pills you can skip your menses.

I know a few women who have done that for that exact reason, but it definitely still made them retain more water.

Seriously though, as a woman, could you imagine having to fight while you were having your ladies days? Not just the water weight but just the general feeling of lethargy, cramps, and irritability. Is advil a banned substance? I lived on that stuff during that time of the month.

No, I can see trying to avoid that at all costs, but it is less than ideal for someone who always has to cut a lot of weight, right? That's all I'm saying.

I think he is trying to get her period under control. It's probably nuts from years of roid abuse.

Oh, I'm sure years of steroids, weight cutting, training, etc have absolutely wrecked her system. I don't doubt that at all.

I hope she makes weight. Her fights are exciting and women's MMA needs her. What I don't get is, why isn't she getting lower on her pre-cut? To say she can't is preposterous considering her power lifting routine. The fact that she has a nutritionist AND a strength and conditioning coach makes it even more mind boggling.

She will absolutely make weight. This is what she does. I feel like when a fighter openly talks about possibly not making weight, there's a chance something is off and they're throwing that out there as an excuse before losing. Yeah I lost but I came in extra drained and with zero energy because it all went into the weight cut.

she will make it, ariel tweeted she was 150 this morning with around 30 hours to go. 9 pounds is still a lot in a day, but i think she will do it.
i don't get why the fight is at 140 instead of 145 though, why should she have to cut down to a catch weight when her opponent also normally fights at 145 too?

I actually think this is true, as well as Cyborg trying to use it as a negotiation tactic and/or drama for her web series thingy.

she made 141, but looked absolutely horrible, the worst i have ever seen any fighter look at weigh in. she was so skinny and had 0 energy, she was barely able to make it onto the scale, used all the energy she had to flex a little, and almost collapsed getting off the scale to start rehydrating.
i would imagine that the doctors will be very carefully monitoring her situation as she just didn't look healthy at all. hopefully getting around 36 hours to rehydrate will be enough for her to get a good amount of her strength back, but she should never fight at 140 again. its just so unhealthy,e specially for a woman. its not worth it to her, and isn't worth it to the ufc either to force her to get down to 140 because the risk of her getting hurt is greater than any reward. just have her fight at 145 going forward, she is huge and ripped at that weight

I'm posting from work, so a picture with no VPL(visible penis line) would be great and easy in the eyes.

I have no doubt in my mind that if she would make some life changes and get serious about 135 its doable.
Naturally all of her videos are going to make the UFC look like the bad guys for making her fight at 140 with the "verge of death" weight cuts. She wants her own weight class like Ronda but people aren't going to pay $60 to watch two women who look more like men beat on each other.
