Damn, hope it isn't as serious as it sounds.
I also didn't realize Matt is only 43.

I guess we will really see if a country boy will survive.
Too soon?
Hope he doesn't die. For reals.

Hughes was my favorite fighter ever until he retired. Wish him well.

Helping a friend somehow, they wanted to not have to wait for the train to pass, made a move and came up short?
Hughes always seemed like the kind of guy that would help a buddy pour a driveway or replace a roof.

****Update
So his manager Cox said he was in a coma. Yikes.
Take it with a grain of salt but some people are speculating suicide. While is does seem unlikely, it does seem very strange for someone to pull out right in front of a train which is what they are saying happened.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but was Hughes in the truck alone or was his buddy he was helping in the truck too? Can't see it being an attempted suicide if his buddy was with him in the truck. Regardless, hope he pulls through.

Not sure why anyone would doubt suicide, it's very common and unless you know him and talked to him on a day to day basis, why would you have any reason to doubt it? Because he was famous or had money?! Just curious. My first thought was suicide because it's usually pretty obvious when a train is coming and I don't really consider Hughes to be stupid.

That was my feeling when Weidman KO'd Silva Funny thing is that since Hughes beat GSP so easily the first time, I was really convinced that Hughes was going to tool GSP in their second fight. I also believed GSP winning their second fight was a fluke and totally expected Hughes to win their third encounter. Part of it was me hanging off Hughes' nuts, but also GSP being a newcomer and me not recognizing his potential. Hell yeah I was pissed. I respected GSP after that, but eventually found out that it was a lot more fun to hate on GSP and drive all the Canadians crazy, than rooting for him. I kept that a secret. 'Till this day, GSP losing to Serra is the greatest "Internet" day of my life. I even won a shitload of money with a Serra bet at like +600 odds. Almost a grand. BuffaloBlue, CanadianWarrior, Jasper, plus 99% of the Canadian dudes hated me so much for hating on GSP. It was fucking great! Dam, I miss Jasper!

But Hughes is a religious, successful, no drama, former champ. Suicide was the furthest thing in my mind.

Probably tried to beat the train, maybe even got his wheel stuck in a rut on the tracks as he went around the arm. That happened around here around 10 years ago to some yag

Because he just doesn't seem like the type. Seems like the perseverance to the end type. I also think this is where religion does save some people and Matt, if I'm not mistaken, is pretty religious. I think he came up short trying to beat the train. Suicide never even came into my mind as an option. Plus, the guy has the aresenal to make suicide a realtively easier time then taking a chance getting hit by a train and being a quaddrplegic for rest of his life.

Matt would definitely be one of my last picks for suicide. Of course Jr Seau wouldn't have been at the top of my list either.

I guess I just don't understand, and will never understand, how someone that's been driving for more than 20 years, comes up to a train crossing and can possibly time it wrong.
To me it just seems impossible to fuck the timing up for any person with driving experience.
Was he crossing in a fucking tractor?
Makes no sense

So I listened to an interview with Pat his old coach and he said that his twin brother said he knows exactly what happened.
Basically the train crossing was on a hill and it was a gravel road. The train conductor said that Matt stopped first and then tried to gun it across. His brother said that those coal trains are miles and miles long. So basically Mat tried to gun it across but he was in his friends truck and spun the tires and didn't make it

The gravel definitely makes sense from the "who in the hell that has been driving that long does this" question. I just figured the guy has probably been stuck countless times waiting for those trains and tried to beat it.
What a bummer situation to have happen. I'll bet the moment he hit the gas and those tires spun, he was probably like "ahhh shit".
