JROD, I asked you about the g36 in the other forum, but what are your thoughts on the g26? The weight is similar and the double stack mag makes these an option: That's very appealing to me. Anyway, have you fired this? What do you think?

Also, I had my heart set on a .45, but all my research says 9mm is the way to go. What are your thoughts?

Best way to store ammunition?

I am a 9mm guy. End of story. I have plenty of .45acp guns that are fun to shoot, but when shit hits the fan I want a 9mm in either a Glock or HK platform.
I didn't delve into the G26 as you were asking specifically about the .45 versions, but there are 3 pistols that are always with me, either on my waist, front pocket, or in my drawers - Glock 19 for primary carry, Glock 26 for "sun's out, guns out" days, and a Glock 43 when carrying in a non-permissive environment (where carry is a no-go).
99.9% of the time, I'm rolling with a G26 for the very reason you have posted in the OP of this thread. The G18 33-rounders are compatible.
I'd take the 9mm Glock platforms over the .45acp all day every day.
FYI - you can find the G18 mags on CNN for dirt fuckin cheap bro.
You can also find 9mm ammo online for $200/1krds easily. PM me for solid ammo ordering man. I'll hook you up!

Best way to store ammunition? Just keep it in an atmospheric controlled environment and you should be good. Mine is stored in a LARGE safe (as I have a metric shit ton of it) in my den. Just make sure you have a heat rod if you throw it in a safe. Closet, spare room, etc is fine for ammo, bro.

Elvis loved guns - especially handguns. Eventually, was at armed at all times (even on stage) with up to four guns. He was notoriously irresponsible with guns. I mean, seriously irresponsible. Possibly the most irresponsible gun owner of his time. He did some seriously stupid shit with guns.
In the GIF in my sig below, Elvis is wearing one on his ankle (possibly on each ankle). I think it was a Derringer - does that make sense? What's the best kind of gun to wear on your ankle? I know fuck all about guns.

I'm not an "ankle-carry" guy, but derringers are a decent choice for that application. The problem with derringers is they are typically only 2 shot, double barrel over/under.

I was looking at Elvis' gun collection, and he blinged the shit out of most of them. Cartel-style. Engravings, gold, jewels, everything. I'm not a gun guy but was fascinated with some of them. Tacky as hell, but still ... some really interesting looking stuff. His guns were as ostantatious as his clothes. If you want to grind your teeth into a sub-atomic powder, then read up on some of Elvis' gun habits. He was a good shot, but was reckless with his firearms. Shooting them off in his house, in public, pointing them at people, leaving them laying around like they were his pill bottles, etc. He would not have passed one of the classes you teach. By the way - I'm obsessed with Elvis now. You'll note this in most of my posts now. It's my new thing. Just so you know.

Yeah man, I kinda picked up in your Elvis infatuation.
Fine by me. He sang at my mom's funeral.
On a CD...

If I store magazines loaded for years, does it fuck up the springs. Also, how often should I replace ammo in a gun that spends most of its time in a hot car?

I was going to ask the same questions in regards to the mags. Also, I'd like to add cold car to the equation since I deal with Cleveland winters.

Slay, I'd think the Florida humidity would play a big factor with ammo as well.

Loaded magazines are not a problem. What wears the springs is repeated compression and expansion through normal use.
Don't listen to the keyboard warriors and gunshop fudds talk about "spring set". It's a fuckin myth. I have GI 30rd mags from the 80s with original springs and followers that are still 100% reliable and they're kept loaded all day every day.
I shoot my carry ammo to empty the mags and rotate it about twice a year. I have Glock and AR mags in my truck that stay loaded year around with no problems. Arkansas/Oklahoma humidity is high but not as bad as Florida. Just shoot it to empty the mag a couple times per year, load up with fresh carry ammo and you should be good to go.
The caveat is what type of gun and magazines. Glock, HK, S&W, Walther, Colt, Beretta, FN, and Sig all make solid mags, springs, and followers. You shouldn't have any issues with those, but if you're using aftermarket mags and not OEM, you will have problems. There are only 5 aftermarket mags that are as good as the OEM ones - MecGar, Wilson Combat, Chip McCormick, ETS, and MagPul.
If you're carrying a Hi-Point, a KelTec, a Taurus, or one of the other lower tier weapons, I'd worry as their mag springs and components are not on the same level of the top tier manufacturers.
Keep them clean and free of debris. Don't oil the mags and you're good to go.

Slay, I'd think the Florida humidity would play a big factor with ammo as well. Yes higher humidity levels will reduce the longevity of ammo faster. Rotate a couple times a year and all will be well.

Going from a hot house to a cold car every morning and every night will be worse then just leaving then in the car as the rapid temperature changes will cause condensation to accumulate which could have adverse effects. My car mags stay in the car. Just make sure they're not directly exposed to sunlight as it will degrade polymer mags like glock's.

Do you hand load any of your own ammo? How reliable are reloads?
I have a buddy who has a nice set up and knows what he's doing, but since your starting with a spent casing, are they less reliable?

Yes, I have reloading equipment (a Dillon 650 progressive press and a RCBS Rock Chucker single stage press), but don't do much reloading anymore. You can definitely save money by reloading but I don't have the amount of spare required to do it anymore.
Nothing wrong with the spent casings as long as they are re-sized properly each time and you're not loading super hot rounds.

What kind of ammunition do you carry for your 9mm? I finally got a Glock 17, I also have a M&P compact 40 cal that is my conceal carry. What brands are you most comfortable using and if you don't mind sharing, could you lemme know about where to get the ammo? Thanks

Not a .40 cal guy so I don't run it. I am a big fan of Federal ammo. Extremely consistent for general use. If you want smoking accuracy in a rifle, grab some Black Hills match ammo. www.sgammo.com is the best place to get ammo real cheap and they have every caliber you could imagine.

Do you hand load any of your own ammo? How reliable are reloads? I have a buddy who has a nice set up and knows what he's doing, but since your starting with a spent casing, are they less reliable? You can't judge all factory ammo equally. Some store bought ammo is on a mass assembly line while some is done with much higher standards. When quantity is more important than quality, just steer clear of those bulk cheaper than dirt bins where they don't indicate the brand of bullet. China and Russian surplus can be extremely dirty and hard on your action. When accuracy is a big concern, hand loading done by someone who knows what they are doing with good equipment is definitely a better product than even good over the counter bullets, unless you happen to find a load that perfectly matches your action and barrel. 2 different guns can shoot the same bullet very differently, and the reasons can be how deep the bullet is seeded, the type of powder, amount of powder, the twist rate, the type of primer, and even how the firing pin centers on the casing. If you get in to precise shooting, which most people don't care about, you can start with a good factory bullet that you like (Barns X, Berger, ect) and then tweak all of the above things individually until you find the perfect fit. All of my friends shoot a 7mm mag, and we started with the exact load shot by John Porter who is a world famous sheep hunter. From there everyone started tweaking different directions until each person was happy, as we all have different guns and shoot differently. That is what hand loading can do that factory cannot. Now that we have our mixes down, we can load 7mm mag with Berger 168gr for about $1.10 a round which is about 1/3th the cost that you can buy the same bullet from the factory for.
