I want to start a very simple website that is based upon selling honey, jam, fruit, vegetables and jerky. I am going to do this to give my kids a way to learn about money and business.
The basic idea is a list of what's available that can be adjusted easily for changing inventory and a way for someone to place an order.
Wondering if anyone had any ideas for what program and hosting service to use. Free would obviously be preferable.

Not entirely free, they charge listing and a sale fee, but Etsy will be the fastest way to do it. If your production is enough you can also sell on Amazon. I don't know the Amazon costs, but Etsy is 20 cent listing fee, and a 3% I think fee on the sale. If you take order from Paypal, paypal then takes another like 3% and a merchant fee.

The one thing you won't be able to get for free is to register your domain (whatever.com) .

Does godaddy charge a continual hosting fee like on a monthly basis?

Does godaddy charge a continual hosting fee like on a monthly basis? yeah, but it isn't much. Your issue will likely be the monthly cost of having access to a merchant service, hence why it may be best to sell out of a place like Etsy who provides it for you

Cool, talking to GODaddy on the phone right now. Checking on cost tiers with them having paypal and CC options or just a straight website with a contact email. Would be nice to have online instant payment options, but not necessary. Since this is strictly for teaching the kids and I am going to be eating all production costs, I guess it doesn't matter at this point.

Don't forget, Paypal will charge you 2.9% of the transaction cost that you are charging plus 30 cents, so make sure you show your kids how to put that kinda cost into the books.

They have a pretty reasonable structure. $8.00 a month for a full site, hosting, email, website builder. If I want to add online payment, it is $12.00 a month extra and I can add it anytime or remove it. Seems fair to me.

That doesn't sound bad, GoDaddy's builder is Wordpress based, pretty quick to learn and use, lots of additional tools available you can get for it too. I have someone that owes me a favor that is pretty good with wordpress, I can see if he'll whip together something for you if you want, but I suggest you and your kids learning it yourself, will allow you to make changes easier that you want, and set up future sites if need be.

Thanks for the offer... I have been messing around with the format and will keep it pretty simple. Paid $260 for 3 years and it's about $12 to add online payment.
I will post the site here when it's published
