Slavery more or less common now vs Colonial era? Slavery predominantly a white thing? Military intervention improving the lives of the liberated? Let's examine some of those narratives in the context of some recent research on modern slavery. Sub-Saharan Africa has an 80% slavery risk, the highest regional risk in the world. Iraq has the highest single state slavery risk in the world. Most of the goods we consume pass through the rungs of slavery at some point. qz.com/811147/modern-slavery-is-still-rampant-in-the-countries-that-produce-most-of-the-worlds-goods/

Meh . . . here's the cliff notes:
Slavery is extremely common today. It's mostly in Africa and the Middle East. Nearly all slave owners are people of color, historically and today. When you look in total, slavery is overwhelmingly a black-on-black issue. Sound familiar? Iraq, the place we've spent trillions of dollars and thousands of lives fixing, has the highest slavery risk score on the planet right now.
Slavery is not what the media tells us it is. It's alive and well. Rampant in a very specific part of the world. A lot of our goods and toys are produced at it's expense. And we've destabilized Iraq to the point that it's now king of the slave states. What have we accomplished there?

That is the true travesty.
