Fucking hell, 2016 was the year of mixed reviews I think. Hell or High Water, Suicide Squad, La La Land. I don't think I've ever seen so many that were so negative vs so positive.
Brother is on HBO GO, I need to rewatch it, I usually do at least once a year. I think it may be one of the best (American-made) fictional gangster movies ever made behind Godfather, it also one of the worst movies to hit American cinema because of what happened behind the scenes. Not only did they censor it to fuck originally, but Hollywood kept sticking their nose in with requirements. Somehow it is still a great movie but everyone knows it would have been even better if not for that. and What makes it worse... because of that, Takeshi Kitano will never do an American movie again.

La La Land
So I'm a guy who has never liked musicals. Not even when I was a kid. It kept me away from most Disney movies even. I was the weird kid who didn't like Alladin, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast etc. And any time someone put on Mary Poppins, or Grease, or The Rocky Horror Picture Show, or whatever, I was out. No thanks. But it's been a while. I'm a lot older; more mature; less concerned with trying to put off a certain vibe, or impress others. Maybe I WOULD like a musical now. So I gave La La Land a go. How could I not? I always like seeing all the most talked about movies that are getting all the award buzz and La La Land just got 14 fricken Oscar nominations. It's more than a musical, they say, but a GREAT film. And you know what? They might be right.........But I'll never know. Because I didn't last 10 minutes with this motherfucker! Seriously, I found out why I never liked musicals. It wasn't that I didn't like music, I love music. It wasn't that I was trying to seem tough and too cool for such a thing. It was because I think they're fucking silly and not real movies. A real story doesn't pause so people can sing and dance. Whenever it happens it's so jarringly weird to me, it takes me out of it and I can never get back in to it. Musicals are just fucking dumb gimmicks made for those who want pure escapism and lack a certain depth of thought to get intellectual and emotional fulfillment out of a normal narrative. They lack the imagination required, so they need it laid out FOR them with dazzling dance moves and joyess music. Same as they would by amazing stunts and explosions in action movies And hey, even though I am totally judging those people, I still get it. If that's how your brain works, it doesn't mean you're dumb. It's just that you require certain things to stimulate you that don't work for me. La La Land may be really good, but it started with a big song and dance number on a freeway. Then just minutes later Emma Stone and her three roommates started singing about whether she should go to work, or go out with them to a party at some rich guys house and that was it. I was done. Couldn't go on. Couldn't fucking take it If you can, go ahead try. I'm just not made for musicals. So for that, for the first time since Inherent Vice, I give La La Land an.... Incomplete / 10

Hell or High Water 7.5/10
This came out of nowhere for me. Didn't see any reviews or even a trailer. Hooked me immediately. Kept me going. Even threw me for a little loop in a way and came to a nice abrupt conclusion.

Even after seeing Moonlight and Manchester By The Sea, and especially after what I was able to stomach of La La Land, I still think Hell or High Water is the best film of 2016

The Lego Batman Movie:
Fun. Until I felt it's like a parade of memes and youtube vines on loop. I fell asleep and my wife woke me up twice because I was snoring. The kids loved it though.
7/10

I stopped watching award shows a while back, because it's just become such a cringe fest of melodrama and false modesty and forced shock...........but there was nothing forced about what happened last night when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway pulled a Steve Harvey and announced the wrong winner for best picture. Or at least he was given the wrong envelope. Talk about cringe, everyone from La La Land was up on stage, passing around the trophy and giving their speeches, by the time it was cleared up that Moonlight was the actual winner.
I wish I had watched it now, because it must of have been like the Superbowl all over again. Just a stunning turn of events. And, like in the Seperbowl, the one I wanted to win, came away with it in the end. La La Land, I mentioned above, lost me after 10 minutes. Moonlight, while not being my absolute favorite, Hell or High Water and Manchester by the Sea were, it was the one that had a chance of winning and I thought it was tremendous. And it was an actual movie. Not a song and dance expo. So ultimately, justice prevailed......in the most fucked up, hilarious way possible
So congratulations La La Land...you are the Atlanta Falcons

The Great Wall...
The idea of the story is pretty solid but this is a kids movie with a bit of blood, was expecting more grit and violence, a very odd film for Matt Damon to be in, the look of the film is excellent, lots of color and the battle scenes and the strategies they use are all really well thought out and true to Chinese cinema but the scenes in between the battles are pretty slow.
The ending could have been a bit more epic, lots of selfless deaths along the way, a solid 6.5 out of 10 and an easy watch.

Hacksaw ridge
Hokier than a hallmark movie. Writing decent, maybe, sometimes,I guess. Execution poor. Vince Vaughan absolutely stinks up the joint and so does whoever played the lead. Action seemed over the top gory and also hokey but by that time I was drifting off to sleep
Did not finish/ 10

Nasa had plenty of black astronauts that they wanted to send on the first moon mission with Buzz Aldren. Look into it real quickly, very interesting story. Apparently nasa had problmes locating space suits that adequately sag below the ass, so they sent an all white space crew instead. Deadlines...had to beat the Russians to the moon...

I thought Hacksaw Ridge was excellent and would give it a 9.5/10. The character was almost unbelievable as a "geeze, shucks" type of Mayberry dude but then they interview the real him in the credits and you can tell Andrew Garfield nailed his role. That's an amazing guy to pull off what he did and a great story.

Pretty good breakdown here. I really enjoyed Moonlight, although I was secretly hoping Arrival might take the win. Even between the wife and I, there was a large discrepancy in our views towards the protagonist and his 'final form'. That form being 'Black' as opposed to 'Little' or 'Chiron'. My wife's view was basically: such a shame that he ended up working in the very industry that had such a direct and negative impact on his life story. My view, summarized: wow, this turned out much better for him than anyone should have reasonably expected, given the trials he had to go through. What better outcome could anyone have hoped for? I think it's more thought provoking than it gets credit for, and it's a bit of a shame that many are undervaluing the film as a reaction to last year's #oscarssowhite or whatever. I haven't seen La La Land, and I can't be bothered, so I have no opinion on whether it deserved the win. However, in my view Moonlight was a solid choice.

Recently dead people getting revived to play a game of killing demons. An anime series that I tried watching back in the day but couldn't get into it. I gave the movie a shot and I was pleasantly surprised. The japanese have successfully crossed the uncanny valley. The 3d modeling and animation were out of this world. They can really act and convey emotions. The voice actors surely were a huge factor but massive props to the animation team.

Incomplete / 10 I'll give this one a shot. I do like musicals. Didn't as a kid; do like them now. Agree that they are dumb gimmicks, but less dumb than a Jason Statham/ James Bond movie, which are sillier than musicals yet come across as if they're to be taken seriously. For some reason, violence has replaced the old, lighthearted dance numbers. If this were 1947, instead of 2017, Jason Statham and Jean Claude Van Damme would be famous as song and dance guys. Their fight scenes are no less ludicrous than any of the great, high energy numbers pulled off by Donald O'Conner or Gene Kelly. Review to come, but my prediction is that it will suck because it has Emma Stone, who never appears in anything that isn't a contrived, subversive, pretentious piece of shit that gets overpraised (See Birdman)

Wolverine. 9/10.
Great intro scene that replaces the standard, marvel post credits scene. I won't spoil it but it's cool.
Logan is violent and set in the future where mutants have been wiped out. He is a down on his luck, drunken, limo driver trying to stay out of the limelight. Age has worn him down and he's slower, doesn't heal as fast but is still the Wolverine. The child he runs into that plays out the story line (assist and protect) is awesome and an equal participant in the violence, and like Logan possess healing abilities, adamantum skeleton and retractable claws. It works well and she should win an oscar for her performance.
It's not your normal feel good, popcorn type Marvel flick. F bombs and carnage galore so also not kid friendly, but I loved it. No after credits scene

oc, it's not called Wolverine, it's called........... LoganI was of a mind to come right out and proclaim this the greatest comic book movie of all time, but I don't think I can really do that. Because it's not really a comic book movie. This is more like a western; a chase movie; a family driven character study; a dark violent near future action drama.....that happens to have a well known comic character in the lead role. So while I can't maintain that it's a comic book movie, I can certainly maintain that it's great First, this movie is dark. It is grim and somber and not for the faint of heart. Claws rip people to ribbons. Bullets blow chunks of flesh, muscle and bone off you. This movie doesn't pretend any different. People get fucking MAIMED in this film. Good, bad, doesn't matter, this movie pulls no punches, or......slashes. But it never feels gratuitous. It's always justified; it always fits. Though still...yes, sometimes it's really fun to watch. Especially when it's some assholes getting their brutal come-uppance Narratively, this film really surprises. This is a smart script, with some really good dialogue. And it is filmed and paced perfectly. I never got bored. The slow parts were intriguing, the fast parts were exhilarating and even frightening at times. Their was real emotion. I felt for this kid.....this feral, murderous kid. I felt for Logan. I felt for Professor X. I felt for a multitude of other characters I can't really mention, without hitting on story spoilers If this is Hugh Jackman's swan song as Wolverine, it's the perfect way to go out. Great closure for Wolverine. Great closure for Jackman. Great movie 9/10

It's good to read ocmma and patsox' review of Logan.
Jackman and Wolverine are the only branch of the X Men franchise I give a shit about.
He's a much more relatable character than any of the others, so I'm glad they went with a more realistic approach here rather than the "comic book movie" approach, which I'm not a fan of to be honest.
I'll be seeing this now.

I'm happy to see the great reviews of Logan as well. I was a little concerned, even though the trailers looked good. IMO the stand alone Wolverine movies have been the worst of the X-Men franchise up to this point, by far. Well, X-Men 3 sucked balls too...

The Witch (Horror Film)
8/10
Cool Horror film without the usual cheese you get from most horror films. (Not that there's anything wrong with those types of films)
If you typically like a lot of scary scenes with tons of gore, people being chased, etc., look elsewhere.
Not one of those types of flicks.
You are more generous than I am on Witch. Strong acting but a very slow moving storyline. Speaking of the star, she was amazing in Split. She has a bright future. JM also done an amazing job. Split 8/10 Nocturnal Animals 7/10 13 Hours 8/10

It aint Old Man Logan but I cant complain. One thing that irks me is the screenwriter in one of the xmen films admitted that they dont even know who Bishop was and only got to know him when they made days of future past. One more reason for me to avoid an xmen movie by fox, but I might give this one a shot.
