I am super close to cutting my Dish cable. It's just an expense that I don't use enough to justify. For the occasional movie, Netflix or torrents are fine.
Only thing I will miss is UFCs on Fox Sports 1. I can always download them after or find a live, shitty stream to watch on Kodi.
Any of you guys cut cable and if so....?

You can always get an Amazon Prime membership, you can customize your subscription there to add on HBO/STARZ/SHOWTIME and others for day-after content. You can also go to putlocker to stream pretty much any show you want and most movies.

I don't even own a television 6 months after you steal a television, you are legally allowed to say you own it. #TheMoreYouKnow

I just upped my DirecTV to have the Genie. So now I can record five shows at once, which is stupid because I never record that many shows at once. But while I was explaining to the dude from Kuala Lumpur about how the fan in my old one broke I started bitching about how expensive the service is in general, and they took 60 bucks off my monthly bill. So I was pretty happy about that.
I think my next house will probably also have a dish. I don't trust the internet. Bunch of assholes on that thing.

I loved my direct tv. The apartment complex i now live in does not allow dishes. Im stuck with Comcast. Their new Xfinity cable boxes are ok. But nothing compared to Genie.

On the plus side, it isn't illegal if you stream free PPV and premium channels via satellite, unlike when you do that for cable

I'm thinking about dropping it as well. Just taking note of my TV watching habits, I'm paying a lot of money for very little use. If I could get 2-3 channels and dump the 997 channels I don't use I'd never notice.

I cut cable out and it saved me almost 170 a month. Now pay for internet and various apps that contains our shows. You can save even more money if you know someone that is willing to share their cable or sattilite log ins. Doesn't cost them anything, but every channel just about all have apps on Apple TV or roku, just log in using their email and password and younhave everything you had on cable.
That's what we do. Only pay for CBS all access, Netflix, HBO, NFL Sunday ticket, and Extra innings.

I've got the HBO mobile log in for occasional series binges like GOT or WW, I got streaming Netflix, Amazon Prime, and 95% of my cable watching consists of Fox Business for markets in the a.m. and ESPN for sports at night, but only during certain seasons. Why am I paying $200/mo for cable? I've had Amazon Prime for nearly 2 years and I've used it less than 5 times.
Any experience with alternatives like the FireStick or similar device? How reliable/cost effective would this be vs just downloading a handful of apps?

Haven't had cable since 07ish. Don't miss it at all.
I do Netflix and have a firestick that has a bunch of good apps. I also don't watch much tv so it's not that big a deal to me, especially since the 2 shows I keep up on are not in season.

I'm laughing reading my last post in this thread. Since that post, I've watched the TV in the living room (DirecTV) for about an hour a week. Literally, we come down at 9:20 on Sunday night to watch Walking Dead, and that's only so our friends on social media don't ruin anything.
The rest is all through the FireStick on the TV in the bedroom. It is so superior that I would rather watch the 40 inch 720p TV than the huge 4K downstairs. No fast forwarding through commercials is actually pretty sweet.
My DirecTV bill is at $110 a month right now. It's gotten as high as $180.
I'm giving serious consideration to cutting the satellite at this point.
Amazon Prime: $8.33 NetFlix: $12.00 DirecTV NOW: $30.00 Showtime: $11.00 Starz: $9.00 HBO: $15.00
It's only a savings of about 30 bucks a month right now, but as soon as DirecTV stop giving me the cut rate it will save us 100 a month. I've been going crazy cutting costs with the business that I started doing it at home too. Shaved a solid $1200 a month via eliminating payments early and shaving off some frivolous crap. $1280 after I cut the satellite, which I have now convinced myself is worth doing.

How do you guys who've cut cable watch live sports? ESPN, Fox Sports, TNT/TBS/CBS (for March Madness). Is there a way to watch those live that doesn't involve Cable/Dish/a shitty online stream?
I barely watch any tv other than premium channels and live sports. I'd give up my directv in a heartbeat if I could somehow get those sports channels without it.

Primarily I am a baseball/football/mma watcher.
So for baseball, I buy the MLB.TV premium membership, through ITunes. Same with football. I pay 4.99 a month for CBS. ESPN, FoxSports, TNT and all those other channels have apps now. They are free if you have a login from a cable provider of some sort. I use my parents for that. No extra cost to them or me.
I basically have an app for every channel my wife, kids and I watch.

You can get ESPN, Fox Sports, TNT/TBS/CBS with firestick?
What about UFC PPVs? Actually, I have the UFCtv app on my smart tv. I suppose I could order it through that. But that may suck. Can you order UFC PPVs through the firestick?
So. Many. Questions...

Tracking. If I can feel confident about keeping up with NBA, NCAAFB, and maybe 2-3 other little seasonal indulgences, I'm ready to pull the plug.
I got a commcast deal, so I can "cast" my phone or tablet onto the big screen, Netflix, YouTube, Internet, Amazon Prime, just about ready to buy a cracked Firestick and shut this whole deal down.

I currently have an Amazon firestick with Kodi and I will be testing out a Chromecast stick and A Roku one.
I am going to also try Sling for a couple of months for $25 that way I get FS1 and the wife gets a lot of her channels. (FX, Bravo, A&E, etc). Right now if you pay for two months of Sling Blue (2X $25), they will give you a free Roku stick ($30 value) so that's a no brainer to me. I believe, don't quote me on this, that Sling also has local channels.
You can order UFC PPV through the UFC app which works fine on the Amazon stick and I am sure works on the other sticks as well. As long as you have good wifi and decent internet speeds
Anyway, once I test all these out and and get an idea of what I am using, what I am not using, etc., I will report back.
After spending $130 a month for years with Dish, I feel like I can spend $20-$40 here and there to check this stuff out. Unlike cable and having to pay for equipment, setups, long phone calls, etc., I can easily cancel any of these things within a minute or two.
Cables dead to me, this is the future.

Can you order UFC PPVs through the firestick? So. Many. Questions... I use Kodi through an android box and haven't figured out a way to stream decent live sports. I actually find it easier to stream sports on my laptop then through the android. I don't watch movies or television shows; pretty much only watch sports. Hence, I haven't cancelled my cable....yet. Tracking this thread as well.

Me switching from the downstairs tv to the upstairs tv is really why The Patriots won. That's how much better Firestick is compared to DirecTV. The only thing you lose is local channels, but in some cases you might still be able to get apps for the local channel specifically.

I only watch football and MMA, I go to my local watering hole for either, just grab some food. A friend's house for big events.

I actually cut it this week. Mine was about $150. Honestly--I bought a hd set of rabbit ears. I can pull NBC--ABC--CBS--and Fox most of the time.
I did buy the Orange package in SlingTV. I thinks the Orange--it's $20. It has ESPN's--TNT--FoxSports 1. So really I don't need it anymore.

I wish I could use the sticks, but I can't use GreenFish on the sticks which renders them useless for everything but sporting events for me.
