I have been interviewing and got offered today to take a job with the city I live in. I have worked at my current employer for pretty much all of my adult life and I definitely will miss it. But while the pay has been +++ for me, the benefits and perks are pretty weak. Lots of irregular hours and other headaches. I really never cared or thought much of them until the last couple of years. But with the addition of a family and growing up, these things have become much more apparent.
I'm going to be project manager for the public works department. The take home pay is going to be the same as my current job, but with a pension plan that is vested after 18 years, a better medical insurance plan with lower premiums, and a 'regular' work schedule, 7am-4:30pm. I'm pretty excited about it, but I am a little nervous to be honest. I am so comfortable at my current place that it is second nature. I know everyone and everything they want me to know about them (and more probably), I have relationships with customers, etc. It's going to be weird doing the whole "scaling back my personality to get to know people" thing and the much more buttoned down environment.
You guys have any tips for switching jobs? Anybody ever worked for a municipality?

I have dozens of friends and close acquaintances that work for state and local government and the following is the universal approach you have to take.
You are going to be shocked at how lazy and unproductive the government workers are. Also the politics and petty undermining of people will be at a different level. Government work is a joke compared to the freight train that is the private sector. You are either going to have to learn to stfu and become one of them or be alienated and miss out on advancement and perks. Learn how to complain and tote the party line about how you are not under worked and why you deserve annual raises even when your getting compensated 20-50% more than the people in the private sector who are doing the same work at double the output.

As a liberal, Andrew will waste no time becoming lazy and entitled. He will find himself right at home with fellow dunderheaded simps who congratulate each other for being brilliant enough to “see through the bullshit” and understand that movies are always right

I am a software engineer. In my field, any IT government job is the dream job for those people with no ambition that just want a paycheck and have no desire to move up. It's a job for life. You have to literally murder someone in order to get fired. Forget about promotions or moving up though. Your boss is also there for life. Only opportunity to move up is when someone either dies or retires. I've been through several layoffs in my career. That almost never happens in a government job. That's the only positive I see. But yeah, lazy, unmotivated, static environment. But some people look for that.

A bunch of tired old clichés from movies and TV being passed off as some edgy takes, huh? Absolutely zero first hand experience, but touted as knowledge, huh?
Sounds about right. Thanks fellas.

Thanks fellas. 80% of my close friends and family work for the government. That’s probably 40 people that tell me the same exact thing. I’m not saying don’t take the job or feel guilty doing it, I’m just saying you will either have to blend in and fall in line or take a chance of causing ripples by pushing on the production when so many of them are in coast mode

Good luck. My only relevant interaction has been sitting on committees with MN DOT. I didn't get great impressions from it. If I'm remembering correctly you worked asphalt projects?
It will be interesting to hear your updates on the change.

It will be interesting to hear your updates on the change. Yeah, I've worked for a paving contractor since I was 20, so about 11 years. The first and main project I'm working on for at least this year at my new job is tearing out and replacing/building new runway at the city airport. Basically my job is going to be overseer of projects. My first day is next Tuesday, and Wednesday I'm meeting with the civil engineers and planners. I'll be jumping right in the deep end. I'll definitely update this thread, assuming the board doesn't completely die.

This board won’t die until CaveBear does.
It is written.
