Any of you guys play? I have started to play over the last few years since I quit playing much after high school. I am a pretty decent golfer just because I learned young and used to practice a lot.
I play way more than I practice, so obviously I am not trying to make the tour or anything.

BUT, Recently I went to top golf and had a blast. It got me back into golf. I have gone back to top golf a few times and have been to the range. I recently got fitted for a new set of irons (Mizuno's 919), I have a schedule for lessons. I'm even building a golf simulator in my garage. Just waiting on the enclosure and screen to come in. I bought the SkyTrak monitor, The GC2, GC quad and trackman are just to expensive. I could always upgrade to one of those later on. My wife is also into golf now. She's never played before, so I thought having a simulator she would be able to practice alot more (me too).

My wife and daughter just started golf from scratch this summer. I restarted golf the end of last summer. I golfed a bit before but was never any good. Took some group lessons. The addiction is real. We also get out all together at an executive course, which is nice.

I've never used one, but I'm looking forward to trying one. If you don't mind me asking, what's installing one at home run? And luckily for me, my old lady has zero interest in it. It's the only time other than Chiefs games that me and my friends still get together and be knuckleheads.

I went more on the cheaper side. I'll list below what I paid. Skytrak simulator : 2000 Enclosure and hitting screan: 1600 Projector : 800 Hitting mat : 800 extra carpet for the floor : 100 So I spent $5300. But with any of the above you could go cheaper or way more expensive. The next better simulator is the CG2 and that would cost $6000 but you can go all the way up to say a trackman that costs $18000. The enclosure and screen. You can go cheaper and spend about $500 for a simple DIY way, or you could spend $10,000 for really nice stuff, or spend close to $20,000 to have people come out and build a real nice one for you I did spend extra on the hitting mat.

From 94-99 I played 70-98 times a year. I remember the 98 cause that was how many times I played in 99. I played in Pa, NY, OH, Va, and NC that year. Nowhere exclusive really. The best I ever shot was an 85 on a par 72 at a place that has held the NCAA Div. 1 Womens Championship.

That's not terrible really for an at home practice facility. But since I pay 1,000 a year at the club, and it's about 2 miles from my house, I'll probably just hold out and use theirs. That's something that will be in my mind when it comes time to build my own house though.

Fair enough. I used to be known to drink quite a bit, as has been documented on here. But I rarely drink anymore since having a kid around. I drank 3/4 of a 16oz Budweiser when I played on Saturday. But obviously I smoke. I usually start the first few holes sober and decide whether any medical assistance is needed. Sometimes I'm feeling it stone sober and don't want to interfere. Other times I smoke and (hopefully) get in the zone. I recovered after smoking at the turn from being +11 on the front to eek out a +2 on the back for at least a respectable round. When I have had more than a beer or two when playing, I usually go into 'grip it and rip it' mode.

I really enjoyed playing golf in my 20’s. When I first moved out of my parents house right out of high school one of my roommates was a guy that had gotten his pro certification in Arizona... he was a 4 under par golfer. We lived in some condos on a golf course and he could play for free. There was about 2 years where I played 18 holes Saturday/Sunday and 9 holes almost every weekday. At that time I was a 4.5 handicap at the very lowest. I have not played in probably 8-9 years, but my 8 year old son is showing interest and I hope to start again.

Do simulators really show bad swings? Seems like you could develop bad habits when you don’t see exactly what the ball is doing

I guess I don’t understand how a simulator detects slicing or hooks. For me the best way to get better was to play not hit balls. I could go to the range and hit one good shot after the other, but that was on a flat lie with no obstacles. If you want to get your score down you should spend at least 3/4 of your time within 15 feet of the putting green.

I'm not an expert, but the technology is pretty good. The mid-to-high end equipment basically gives you a laser dot or similar field to place your ball in. The best ones measure swing speed, launch angle, spin rate, direction. If you really duff something out to the side it might not read it. I assume that the calculations are pretty solid. The screen will definitely show a hook or a slice. They get a lot of data on it. I think the mat type makes a difference bc most mats prevent you from hitting shots fat. So you get some false positives on that. However, you'll also beat the shit out of your hands and wrists if you keep pounding them fat.
Lesser models may not have launch angle or all of the spin information. I assume those use more trajectory and swing speed only calculations.

Do simulators really show bad swings? Seems like you could develop bad habits when you don’t see exactly what the ball is doing Yes and no. There is simulators GC2, GCquad, Trackman and a couple others will show you bad swings, They will even show you where on the club face you hit the ball (Heel, toe, high, low ect). The cheaper sim I bought does not. But it will show you where your ball is going, Show it will show a slice or a hook, it even shows a topped shot. Its all done with the pictures it takes and it calculates the spin/s on the ball. I can buy another piece that I put on the club and it will read out my swing. Meaning it will show me how I'm swinging the club (In to out or Out to In), It will show if I'm picking up the club to much or leaving it to flat. The simulator has a driving range on there so you can just hit some balls and see how they are flying. It also has a improvement area, this is where you try and land the ball in a small circle from different distances. Then you can also play a round of golf on many different courses. I'm out of town right now. But once I get back I'll be hooking everything up. I'll take a picture of it and try to post it. If your interested you can always youtube golf simulator reviews. You'll learn alot from those videos.

I kicked this kids ass last night at the local mini golf course slash pizza joint. Does that count?
For an autistic half blind kid he did fairly well, so good that I thought he may have a golf simulator at home! I still didn't take it easy in him! Little punk shouldn't have wagered a large pepperoni!
Who's next? Daywork?

If you want to get your score down you should spend at least 3/4 of your time within 15 feet of the putting green. Sounds like you are a damn good golfer. It's a good skill to have in life, even if you aren't trying to make the tour. I'm looking forward to trying someone else's simulator and seeing for myself about them. But I agree with you and cb about playing>driving range. I played by myself this year quite a bit when I had time and usually at non peak hours. That was the best practice I have ever had. If I fucked a shot up, I'd drop some balls and hit it until I got it right, within reason. I wouldn't hit more than 4, and I wouldn't even aim to be perfect. Just hit the shot acceptably well, preferably a couple times. Really helped me dial in adjustments for playing from different lies and recognizing mistakes in my swing or setup for shots. I also have gotten in the habit of spending at least 30 minutes before I play, chipping and putting. I've developed two repeatable and increasingly accurate shots from 15 yds and under from the green. Putting is the strongest part of my game. I rarely 3 putt, but I don't get as aggressive with putts sometimes and miss scoring opportunities. I really need to learn a pitch shot. The 30-75 yd from the green range is my glaring weakness right now.

I finally used the simulator at my club and it is pretty cool. It would definitely be nice to have one at home. I have practiced with the old "record your swings and make adjustments" method, but getting that non visible feedback is awesome. But, it's been so unseasonably warm here that I really haven't shut her down for the year. My brother in law and I played Christmas eve and I played with my dad's new wife's family on Christmas.
