I haven't played since the changes, but... from what I did. Yes, and no.
Yes, it is a breath of fresh air. It is basically a 3rd person, modern action heavy more open world version of Destiny. It can get repetitive, but not in that annoying way.
No, while you'll put quite a bit of time into it, once you get towards "end-game" there isn't that much unless you play with a group of friends and trying to control dark-zones.
There is still a ton of potential for the game though. A few changes here and there and they could basically re-launch it if they wanted and gain a large player base (at least from the last time I played.)

Got any recommendation for really good open world games like Fallout, Elderscrolls, etc?
I was looking into Dark Souls III but not sure.

You could look into Elder Scrolls Online. Yeah it an MMO, but it a pay once, not a subscription. I had quite a bit of fun with it, even ran on this POS laptop, tempted to re-install and get back into it.
There is also Rimworld, which is like a graphical and more adult version of Dwarf Fortress.
Red Dead Redemption if you didn't play it yet, as well as Dragon Age Inquisition

Cool, I will look into those.
Sometimes games that are too RPG-ish can be strange to me. I think that's why I like a more hybrid version like Bethesda does.
Dishonored II is looking pretty good

Oh if you haven't done Borderlands 2 yet, there ya go.
But if you liked the Elder scroll series, I'd look into Elder Scrolls Online. It already has a ton of added content since last time I played, and looks like it gonna be getting even more since they delayed the next Elder Scrolls game in favour of expanding ESO further.

I will definitely check out Elderscrolls online. I already knew about it but just assumed it didn't take off.
I played Borderlands 2 for a while but I never finished it. I am hoping 3 will be more open and it seems like it is.

Oh man I really feel like getting back into ESO now. I sorta want to start from scratch but my Nightblade managed to get a really nice set of armor because of one of the guilds I was in at the time.

So I re-installed ESO last night. I've decided I'm just gonna create a new character later tonight, but on my old char I used the skill point refund (because of all the changes since I last logged in) to just make him a crafter. Anyways, if you decide to give the game a shot, I can hook you up with some leveling gear. It is a friendly community for the most part though so easy to find help.

what does it run?
I usually bootleg all my games but if it's good, I may go with it. I want to watch some video of gameplay

It is buy to play (like guild wars), you purchase once and never need a sub, but you can still get a sub that gets you some extra stuff each month. You can buy the base game for 30 now I think (ton of gameplay in that). You can buy the "ultimate edition" which I think is 60 and has all the DLC/expansions with it. Or you can do the base game, and do the sub and have access to all the DLC without purchasing them. I think 2 months of crown bonus from a sub is enough to in-game buy all the DLC that way.

That not a bad price for the base game. I say go the base game to see if you like it, from what I can tell the is no major need for the DLC, but if you like it and get DLC later, you won't spend much (if any more if on sale) than getting now. Also if you subscribe for extra bonuses (you can read about them) you have auto access to DLC content

I'm on the pc version of course. If you like the elder scrolls series, you'll at the very least get your money's worth of it.

ESO takes a slightly old-school approach to the MMOs, along with "modernizing" them rather than flat out replacing them. That may take getting used to. A few points to note though.
1. Until you get off the first area, there isn't much social aspect to it. I don't think that will matter to you, and a plus to ESO is you can play the whole thing solo if you want just like other Elder Scroll games.
2. The market in the game is a hybrid system of old-school (where you used to have to basically advertise your goods, no auction house) and new-school (centralized auction house). The way it works is you can join up to 5 guilds at a time. When I played I was in 2 social guilds for the conversation/help, and 2 trade guilds which are guilds that people join specifically to sell their shit. The guilds each week I think it is, maybe ever few days, bid for a vendor. There are many vendors spread through the game, obviously vendors in high traffic locations get higher bids, if you win, that vendor sells the goods anyone from the guild puts up for sale. So each vendor will have different pool of goods.
3. The game has add-ons, there are quite a few that I suggest, we can talk about that later. There are some to make combat numbers easier to see, some to help keep track of recipes/research for crafting, and Master Merchant which keeps track of prices that people and yourself sold stuff for so you know what to list it at.
4. Balance is quite nice, a meta OP build doesn't last long in the game, the developers are good about that.
5. Just about any base class can be built for multiple functions, be it DPS/Tanking/Healing.
6. Speaking of tanking, I tend to not go tank/defensive style in these games, but ESO has really creative tanking possibilities. From straight just Brick Wall style defense to (which used to be insanely overpowered) a squishy nightblade built as a "sap tank" where it just kept taking heals from the target to keep itself alive.
7. The community used to be (and I managed to get on for a lil' bit today and seemed to still be that way) is very friendly and helpful.
8. Don't worry too much about the oh damn I wish I used skill points this way instead of that, you can re-spec in-game for a price that isn't that bad.

I just ordered it from Amazon and it will be here Saturday. I would have done a downloaded version but for whatever reason they charge way more. Go figure.
Anyway, I will check back to these notes once I get it and start playing.

They just released a massive patch for the game, basically making it even more open-world (so you can go anywhere right after the tutorial if you want to just like all the other elder scroll games), also making all the lower content semi-scale to you now I believe so if you really like an area you can stay around there instead of this one high level zone that scaled to level your later levels. Now each weapon style has an ultimate ability (before only the class skills had ultimate ability available). You've picked a good time to start.

So I went to install it last night and it kept on getting hung-up in the java part of the installer. I tried a bunch of different ways and it still wouldn't install. I even tried to uninstall java and reinstall and it didn't work.
So I searched online and this was a fairly common issue with different ways around it. In the process of all this trouble, I realized that my SSD drive has about 14gb left on it and from what I read, this game needs about 25gbs or so. I am ordering a larger 500gb SSD drive and cloning this 250gb on.
Should arrive in a couple of days. In the meantime, I need to figure out what the problem is with the install.

That's odd, I don't have much experience with ssd though So I installed a new drive on my computer but still couldn't installed the game disc. It got me so damn frustrated that I just said fuck it and paid for the download.
Anyway, that gave me problems installing as well but I finally got it working.
I am just like 15 minutes into it ATM
Seems pretty good!

That is odd, if you got from Amazon they good about refunds. Let me know what you decide on weapon/armour combo and I'll make ya a training set to help level faster. I think I can get you an invite to the trading guild I'm in so you have a place to sell your junk.

If you message me your in-game name I can add you and can even mail the stuff to you so it there waiting for ya to make those 30 minutes more enjoyable.
